I just did a bit of a search and it appears the firmware patch to allow booting of Powermac G3's with an Encore G4 upgrade installed has now been made available from Sonnet online for a few years now... The link to the page is here:

This was shipped with the Encore ZIF processor uprgrades to patch the code into the firmware necessary to support G4 processors in the B+W Yosemite G3 boards (Rev.1 and 2), It should also allow you to use a Yikes G4 CPU in a G3. I'm running one in my patched G3.
I am going to assume that this will not be of any use to beige G3 owners as they still have OldWorld ROMs. I claim no responsibility for anybody ballsing it up, and I'm sure in this day and age, Sonnet don't either... So please make doubley sure that the version you download is the correct one for your machine, and follow the instructions carefully to the letter. You do have the potential to make the computer permanantly unbootable if you really mess up the install.

Thank you for posting this! Most of my collecting and tinkering is with beige stuff but I do hav one b&W that I may play with and this will be handy to have.
