Whatever NeXT
Posted by: TheNeil on 2008-02-15 01:47:58
Been watching a NeXT Station Colour on eBay all week and...I won it! Amazingly not a single other person bid on it so, for a measly £25 (+p&p), I landed the base unit (25MHz, 16Mb RAM - that's getting upped), the original 17" monitor, keyboard, mouse, soundbox and cables.

Now the bad news. Apparently it's lacking a hard disc but I'm figuring that I can just shove a SCSI drive in there, hook up an external SCSI CD drive and install NeXTStep (provided that I have a copy lying about)...or am I a fool of the highest order (especially as I have no experience of NeXT stuff)?

apple SCSi drives works well, other may complicate the process

if the ROM ver. in machine is older than v3.2 you can only boot with floppy other way it can be installed directly from CD

I had my eye on that as well but it was just too far to justify driving to collect it. I'll be interested to hear how you get on with it though.

I figured that it'd sky-rocket towards the end of the auction and just kept an eye on it out of curiosity (sure these have been going for over £100 when they've come up before). When no-one had bid with 7 minutes to go I could feel the old heart start thumping. Then 3 minutes and nothing. Then 1 minute, so in went a bid.

Just have to see what's what when it finally lands on my desk and Mr Screwdriver gets a chance to play 😀

can you post a link of that auction?

found it! http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/NeXT-Station-Color-Complete-NeXTStation-Monitor-etc_W0QQitemZ220199831493QQihZ012QQcategoryZ4193QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

the processor is probably 68040 not '030 as described and it has a hard drive too ... as the seller doesnt know much about the item he is selling

well, lucky you getting it so cheap [😉] ]'>

I figured he was talking out his when it came to the 68030 😉 How do you figure that it has a HD?

Now then, where to find the cube version (as if)...

He thinks that there is no HD because the Nextstaion couldnt boot and is looking for network. This is because PRAM battery is dead. You have to press cmd + tild (~) after system checking and type; bsd -to start from drive, if it has any ...

It maybe does or doesent have an HDD, you will found out when it comes.

Now you sound like someone who knows what they're talking about...so prepare to be bombarded with questions when it turns up 😉

Had it ended on a Sunday it would probably have rocketed up in the last 10 seconds. That seems to happen with alot of auctions that end on Sundays...

I did have my eye on that myself but I don't have the space for all that gear I'm afraid. Especially given my current liberation effort - more on that to come soon! 😉

I got the same machine, albeit with less stuff, for free
