They look like just the job. Hopefully the price will come down in time and then I may well get a couple for my older PowerBooks. There is definitely a good market for these.

The price won't come down. Manbu is of the opinion that since he's the only source, he can control the price. So far, he appears to be correct.
That said, he's been criticized in the past for not responding well to queries... so a responsive Manbu is great news, after all!

I actually bought one of these and put a 512 cf card in a pb 540c.....I want to try a 1 gig card...but an worried it will not work properly...I would appreciate any feed back you might have...
Speed difference is nominal....boot and seek time is awsome...
540c with 360mb SCSI HD about 1 min to 1 1/2 min
540c with 512mb cf with adapter only 20 secs...
Running system 7.5...

It would be fabulous to see some benchmarking test results on the two drives. Even for the working and solvent around here, $100 is a lot to spend speculatively; such results would therefore help (solvent) people (I hope) to make up their minds about purchasing one of these adapters.
I understand that the speed rating of different CF cards also differs, so it might be that a faster 1 GB card in the adapter would yield even better results.
I have been unable to find test results on Artmix's products in my own trawls through the web, so posting this info. would possibly be a first. You da man!

Can CF cards workk as hard drives? Most are rated at 10,000 read write cycles. Seems to me you would wear a CF card out fairly fast by using it as the primary hard drive.

I am thinking of purchasing one of the adapters. But I will sell off some extra Mac stuff to pay for it first. I think putting into a Duo would be great. Make the unit even lighter than it is already. As to wearing out the CF card, it might be an issue if it was in your one and only computer, but for casual use in vintage computers, I'm not sure if it is a very big issue. Having different O.S.'s on different cards is another good option.

Maybe see if you can get a microdrive working with the adapter if flash's write limits pose a problem. Seek times not as good as flash but performance should still be a nice improvement over the old hard drives. The Powerbook's SCSI bus is going to be the real bottleneck in either case.
As for cost, the prices of working 2.5" SCSI drives I've come across lately (when they actually show up 😛 ) isn't much better than going the cf adapter route and the remaining lifespan of those old drives is questionable. The flash you can get brand new and you can easily keep things going indefinitely, just replace the flash card if it wears out or you want to upgrade.

Yes the adapter and card are internal, replacing the harddrive. The silence is great!!!

What I would do instead of this is get a SCSI-IDE 2.5" adapter (can be had for $20-$60) and then a IDE-> CF adapter, which are almost free. Same performance and alot cheaper...

I would certainly like to see a 3.5" CF to SCSI adaptor as I am having problems with old hard drives in my Macs snuffing it. Since the circuit could be a lot bigger due to the space available in the 3.5" bay, one would hope it would be cheaper than the 2.5" adaptors too. Cheaper adaptors will sell far better than ones priced as high as they currently are and the sellers will still make a fair profit due to number of sales. I'm sure these will come in time.

I've found several that adapt 2.5" IDE to 3.5" SCSI (normal 50-pin connector, not the Powerbook's 40-pin), which are somewhat confusingly listed as just 2.5" adapters. I've found none that do 2.5" IDE to 2.5" SCSI though. They exist of course, but the only known source is the larger 2.5" SCSI drives which are rare and cost as much or more than the CF adapter.
If you do know another source though, by all means tell us. 😀
