| Quadra 700 and Duo Dock Plus |
Posted by: paws on 2008-01-19 18:33:01 What it says.
Don't know the exact specs of the Quadra (no HD so no OS) and I don't have a Duo to test the Dock with, but it's got some kind of video card in it which I'll probably put in the Quadra.
Got it for free, and the guy came to drop it off, even.

I love Quadra 700s. They're a great form factor and be modded in many ways.

Posted by: Unknown_K on 2008-01-19 22:05:49 Why did the 700 only have 2 Nubus slots? Did the heatsink get in the way of the 3rd one (unlike in the IIci/IIcx it was modeled after having no heatsinks on an 030)?
I would have liked a 3 slot Q700 because of the ease of getting into it and its small form factor (plus built in video), but 2 slots is not enough.

Dunno why it only has two, but for me it's actually not much of an issue. I generally have an ethernet card and some form of 24-bit video card in my IIci - neither which is necessary in the Q700. So I've got one slot left in my IIci, and both left in my Q700.

Posted by: tmtomh on 2008-01-20 11:13:53 There's no good reason I know of that the Q700 had only 2 NuBus slots. The case allows for three, and there's room on the mobo for it. The Q700 has a 150 Watt PSU, which I imagine would be enough to handle 3 cards.
In fact, one of my favorite 68k Macs I've ever owned was a Q700 into which I swapped a Quadra 800 board. In addition to a faster CPU and system bus (33MHz vs. 25MHz), and faster RAM (72-pin SIMMs vs. 30-pin SIMMs), the Q800 board has the third NuBus slot. All you have to do is cut an extra hole in the rear of the Q700 case, and you've got a super-compact Q800 (without an optical drive).
Best,
Matt

Posted by: Unknown_K on 2008-01-20 12:30:57 Well I like setting up video capture machines, and you generally need a SCSI card, Audio card, Capture card (3 slots). Some of the very early AVIDs used a IIci with 3 slots, a 3 slot Q700 would have been nicer.
Apple likes to cripple machines just so they won't affect sales of their priceier higher end models.

Well I like setting up video capture machines, and you generally need a SCSI card, Audio card, Capture card (3 slots). Yeah in that case a Q700 wouldn't work. Although when the 700 was released, the 900 was the only other member of its 'family'. And putting one more slot in the 700 probably wouldn't have affected sales of the 900. So I dunno what they were thinking.
