| PowerBook 540c from ebay |
Posted by: Bolle on 2008-01-18 07:35:30 got this one for 5 bucks + shipping.
the case was really beaten but I already did put the internals into one of my 520 cases that looks much better...
The 540c came with 20MB RAM and the PCMCIA module...
The 350MB HDD in there is secured by an app called FileGuard - it wants a password to let me access the HD. anyone has an idea on how to get around this? disabling extensions or mounting the drive on another mac doesnt do the job... the drive mounts and there is only one file on there that says, the HD is protected :/
did put in one of my 520s HDs that already has an OS setup on it.
all in all a nice conquest for only 5 bucks ๐

If you have a way of reinstalling the OS, (which I imagine you do, since 7.5.5 is free from Apple), then just reformat the HD.
I did that once with FileGuard on a drive. The first time I reformatted the drive (via HD SC setup from an Apple boot floppy) it didn't work. Then I tried it again and it did.
Best,
Matt

Posted by: blackbird on 2008-01-18 12:09:52 What kind of PCMCIA module?
|
Posted by: Bolle on 2008-01-19 04:52:21 its a rev b module, but Im not planning to uzpgrade this one to PPC so rev b should be fine...
is it true that you really need a rev c module for wifi? I dont see why you would need one because both, the rev b and rev c are PCMCIA 2.1...
ah... and i already have a new OS on there... (7.6.1)
I know that i can format the drive to use it but i thought there may be a way to get around the protection... just out of curiosity and to see what the previous user did with the machine...

Is it me (or the flash of the camera), or do the keyboard keys look very light compared to the case?
Is it that the grey case has darkened over time (much like beige cases get more yellow), or is there something unusual about the color of those keyboard keys?

Posted by: Bolle on 2008-01-20 11:36:47 npe... some of the localized keyboards have other colors than the US layout keyboards... I also have an US and a french one for the 500 series and they have the normal dark color... all german ones Iยดve seen so far have the more brighter color.
