Wallstreet - Graphics
Posted by: macintoshme on 2007-12-16 13:21:40
I was wondering if anyone knew of any3D software that works well on a Wallstreet. I am a little disappointed by the mobile Rage Pro. I remember being able to play Unreal on low settings on my beige G3, but the playback on this thing is ridiculous. I am trying to think back if there were any Bugdom like games that would play on this thing ... I hope I posted this in the right place, if not, I am sorry.

Nanosaur plays well, and some OpenGL 1.x games like Star Wars Episode 1 Pod Racer play pretty well. QuickDraw 3D RAVE (or just RAVE for short) games like Tomb Raider also play pretty well. I think Carmageddon might play alright, but I've never tried it myself. Quake 1 (RAVE) plays okay, too.

A Wallstreet should handle Unreal equally as well as your beige G3 as they likely have the same GPU, bus speed, VRAM speed, L2 cache size, and memory size. I'm surprised that it doesn't play alright for you...

Peace,

Drew

My beige was kinda souped up.

Apple "Ghetto" G3

G3 300 (OCed Stock 233)

768MB RAM

7200 RPM HD

6MB VRAM

Unreal Tournament runs great under OS X on my Beigey, but that'sproabbly because I have the Radeon card - I wouldn't want to try it with just the 6 MB integrated video (which I don't think even works in Tiger)

I have, it is fine though I don't think I tried Carmageddon 2.If I recall Falcon 4 plays okish on a Lombard... dunno about a WS/PDQ.

btw, I have noticed that my PDQ does not like displaying 640x480 and 800x600 fullscreen so things like StarCraft are stuck with a huge black border.

Also, Driver on my PDQ just crashes or locks up or something with a black screen if I recall but runs ok on my Lombard so I don't know if that is software or tied to the hardware of my PDQ.

*Edit

what about things like Oni, DogfightCity, Hexen 2, Valkyrie, mechwarrior 2, Tomb Raider III, chuck yeagers air combat, Descent II, Wolf 3D, Marathon trilogy?

I know Oni works on my Lombard but it had been so long since I used my 300Mhz/384MB RAM/40GB HD containing PDQ for any OS 9 gaming so I can't really remember.

Bunch more games that I cannot recall atm as well.

Descent 2, Marathon, MechWarrior II, not a problem. As for Oni...well it runs on the Rage Pro in my iMac, but its not that much chop, IIRC.

The first generation Wallstreets use the Rage 3D LT chipset, the second generation use the Rage LT Pro. They are not exactly the same as the Rage II+ and Rage Pro found in the beige G3, so you shouldn't expect the same level of performance between desktop and laptop machines.

but from that era should you ever ?

i agree its a start but the first powerbooks that could rightfully be considerd to be desktop replacements are the lombards and pismos followed by the orginal tibooks
