i got a 500 mhz ibook here which i orginally intented to buy to swap the logic board out and put it in my 800 mhz

but i am having second thoughts now the 800 mhz is working just fine with a shim

and i am looking in to the posibilites of getting this 500 mhz working again

it does not have an hd its combo drive is wonky

but it wil boot of cd's off my external dvd writer

thats where it stops though

os 9.1 gets to the desktop which si empty and nothing else happens

jaguar crashes on the apple logo screen

panther kernel panics

and i didnt even try tiger

am i correct in assuming the problem lies in the lac of an hd or is it a bigger problem ?

if it is should i even bother to wrench a hd in it or swap the logic board out ?

hi,

i am far from being an expert, but my imac 400mhz booted os 9 just fine with no hd in it, os x _may_ be kernel panicing because of no swap space, although once when i was trying to install os x and it did not recognize the drive it booted nicely, only there were no options at the select drive screen.

hmm odd

it might be because its booting of an external drive too

i orderd a 20 gig hd and wil do some unfun cracking of the ibook

hopefully.. 🙂 i have an older 160gbyte in my 400mhz one, it only sees 128 gigs, but that is fine. i think you should take a closer look at hdd and motherboard connectors, sticking them in tighter saved me lots of headaches. 🙂

the hd should arrive today so we wil see what happens in the worst case i end up with spare parts and a logic board to swap out
