Greetings from my G4, now with Leopard!
Posted by: MultiFinder on 2007-11-20 07:07:15
Just popping in to say howdy to y'all from my trusty old G4, now running Leopard with a little help from my hacked installer πŸ™‚

Leopard runs amazingly well on this machine. It actually manages to be faster than Tiger. It's a very nice overall experience. Obviously some of the more graphics-intense things are a wee bit slow on this machine, but overall the experience has been great and I'm gonna be switching over to Leopard on this machine as its primary OS πŸ™‚

Oh, btw, the specs are as follows...

Model Name: Power Mac G4

Model Identifier: PowerMac3,3

Processor Name: PowerPC G4 (2.9)

Processor Speed: 500 MHz

Number Of CPUs: 2

L2 Cache (per CPU): 1 MB

Memory: 768 MB

Bus Speed: 100 MHz

Boot ROM Version: 4.2.8f1

With the stock Rage 128 Pro 16 meg graphics card. And it STILL gives decent performance πŸ™‚

Just some words of encouragement to you out there considering Leopard no your unsupported Mac.

i just got leopard running on my g4 machines as well. its a bit pokey but still fun.

My machines specs are:

dual 500mhz g4' processers

2 gig ram

120 gb hd/40 gb hd

stock rage 128 16mb video card

yea, you both would see a huge performance gain if you got a better video card, right now you are limited to that rage 128 card. a radeon or better would show a big improvement (altho still slow in allot of places)

i have a GF2 MX and it isn't that bad, the dock is a bit on the sluggish side. my issue is that i have 768mb ram and its not really enough to really allow Leopard to run like it can, the HDD goes into a swap fit at times (happens at random) but does stop and starts working good again.

other then that, i have had a uptime of 14 day's without a restart ( due to updates) i have only had on app crash which is safari, and it only crashed once.

If it runs that good on your pathetic G4's than my G5 should be smokin'

Seriously, I love how Apple's OS versions get faster with releases. IT always makes me happy.

My Pismo was great with Panther and with Tiger it was even faster. That made me smile.

your pathetic G4's
Urgh, I'd rather use a 486 with Windows 98 than one of those pathetic G5 things πŸ˜› πŸ˜› πŸ˜›

You have plenty of CPU, RAM, and hard drive space for Leopard to be comfortable with, (in spite of Apple's "minimum" specifications) your only weak link is your video card. Upgrade that and you'll see a huge improvement.

yeah was thinking the same thing. im gonna flash a pc nvidia 5200fx 128mb agp video card for the g4. i also didnt care too much how it performed on the g4 since its not my main machine
