| Another Freecycle conquest |
Posted by: LSD on 2007-11-18 03:36:00 This time a 7300/180. Came with an AppleDesign keyboard (I kind of like this. Same layout as the Extended/Extended II but without the annoying clicky clacky nonsense), ADB II mouse and 17" Multiple Scan display. Not sure what I'm going to do with it yet, I'm thinking of using it to investigate what might be wrong with the 7300/200 I turned into a 7600/200. It'll have to spend some time out in the shed first, it was in a house with smokers so it stinks to high heaven :/

Tobacco smoke forms a sticky black/brown film on everything it touches. You might have tar buildup inside that is bridging the circuit traces.

Posted by: LSD on 2007-11-18 07:17:24 Nah, I don't think it's that. The 7600 is acting like it has a dead PRAM battery (it'll chime and then nothing). I have a bad feeling it's lobo trouble (I found it in a dumpster and the case was in pretty bad shape) but I want to eliminate every other possibility first. The 7300/180 booted right up with no trouble.

Posted by: macintoshman on 2007-11-18 07:26:10 Eeew. I never got a system that belonged to a smoker. I'm glad. Why does it seem that the 7xxx machines are all bad?
But nice conquest. I never got an apple monitor.

the 7300 isnt a slouch either only the 7100 and 7200 are mediocre

Posted by: LSD on 2007-11-18 08:11:54 The 7300 has virtually the same logic board as the 7600. The only difference is the 7300 lacks the A/V circuitry. All the pads are there, it was just never installed as a cost-cutting measure

... It'll have to spend some time out in the shed first, it was in a house with smokers so it stinks to high heaven :/ Time helps. But depending on the sensitivity of your nose, some smoker contaminated systems stink for years afterwards. There is some tar film everythere inside and out that cleans up well with ethanol wipedowns. But the worst area seems to be right around the cooling fan, where gross powdery deposits of tar and ash build up on the fan blades, and later shed onto downstream components and into the air. If you can access the blades, you can remove this ash buildup by cleaning in place with moist cotton swabs....much better than smelling and breathing it whenever you run the system!

But nice conquest. I never got an apple monitor. Yeah, my B&W G4 came from a heavy smoker. EVERYTHING inside was coated in tar. It took me about three days to totally clean it out so I could turn it on and not choke :\
Apple Monitors are nice. I got a Multiple Scan 15 Display with my 6500, and it's a kick-arse monitor.

Posted by: Temetka on 2007-11-20 10:46:32 I smoke, but not around my machines.
That being said, I have yet to encounter any of those tar filled machines you people seem to find.

Posted by: madmax_2069 on 2007-11-20 12:24:13 i also smoke, but i take care of my machines. i clean them out and clean the cases almost monthly. you would only find dust in them when it comes time to clean inside the case.
all of my Mac's are spotless. allot of smokers don't care to keep their machines clean and looking nice and in good maintenance. i do, its like i have OCD with them they have to be clean and looking good, i know what can happen to a computer if you just let it go (very nasty, and can fry the puter).
if they are not clean, i am not happy.

Posted by: Mike Richardson on 2007-11-20 15:29:27 My Mom smoked for years. She used to have an ashtray right next to the Performa 400. The case was dirty but the tar film came right off, and the inside of the computer seemed to be fine.

Posted by: MacTCP on 2007-11-20 15:34:06 I ask now, before I buy anything, if it's smoke-free. I shudder remembering my past experiences with smokey items.
