B&W g3 problem with ethernet
Posted by: Unknown_K on 2007-10-31 23:05:05
I have a B&W G3 that works fine getting on the net under OS 9.1, but when I switch to the OSX 10.3 drive it cannot connect or sometimes a web page comes up after a long time (timeout issues?).

The DHCP seems to function correctly under OSX, just wondering what is wrong with the setup (since the hardware works fine under os9).

Any ideas?

If this is strictly internet related, I couldn't really say what the issue may be. However, if you have similar network performance discrepancies between the two OSes, you may want to look at OS X's Network Utility. Under the appropriate selection (probably "Network Interface en0") in the Info tab, you should be presented with all pertinent information, such as MAC address, IP address, link speed, etc. Also, on the right side of that is Sent, Received, and Collisions. If you're getting lots of collisions or a low Link Speed (10Mb on a 100Mb connection, for example), you might want to look at changing your cable or try maybe investigate your other network devices (switches/hubs/routers/etc).

I connected the modem directly to the B&W and OSX works fine, must be an issue between the router/switch and how OSX works compared to OS 9.x. Does OSX load a firewall that might affect things?

Yes, and you can access it via the Sharing prefpane in system preferences.
