Almost new PowerPC upgrade for Centris and Quadra
Posted by: wilykat on 2014-09-08 16:35:49
Scored this almost new box of powerPC upgrade. The box is distressed and has markers "$10.00" and "Do not open" plus some water stain. But inside is quite nice with books, papers, the PowerPC card and the 610 adapter plus a few dead bugs. The only thing that seems to be missing is the System upgrade disks.

I noticed it doesn't mention Centris or Quadra 660 so either 660 came out after the upgrade kit was released, or 660 can't have this upgrade due to AV support.

As far as I can tell, the hardware were never used.  It's like someone bought it or a computer store got it, left it aside for many years forgotten, quite possibly the 7.1.2 upgrade disks were borrowed or stolen, and it finally ends up at the local thrift shop.

The included paperwork are:
Power Macintosh Upgrade Card User Guide

Product Registration (never used)

Warranty info sheet

Software license sheet

packing list sheet

Hardware are:

PowerPC card

610 adapter

hardware bag (rear slot plate, 2 thumb screws, and 3 regular screws)

The packing list does mention 5 disks which is not in the box.

660 is pizza box, too short for the card is why its not listed.  Although it works for the 610.  maybe the AV parts are in the way.

I have one of these for my Quadra 605, just need to get it installed.  Only been procrastinating for 3.5 years!

Oh wow I was literally using one about an hour ago.  Mines installed in a Quadra 800.  My hints are:

  • Systems above 7.1 don't require the enabler
  • You must physically turn off the computer and on again after enabling the card in the control panel
  • Double chiming is normal
  • I use 72mb RAM with Mac OS 8.1 being 'the best' I've ever used on this machine
  • Your Macintosh will identity as a Power Macintosh when the card is used.
I've never seen the box so you've filled that gap in my knowledge haha.  Awesome price too.

You got a Q610 angle adapter? I think you'll be getting an email from Bunsen very soon. He was searching for one of those a while back IIRC.

Yes it has a 90 degree adapter for C/Q 610.  Still not sure if I want to keep it for my C610 or sell it as a set.

Hi WilyKat, about this card, do you want to sell it perhaps?  I have a Quadra 800 that needs an upgrade.
