Have you tried tracking down one of the Adaptec cards :

Mine is am28f010. I'm going to try directly programming it when I get the chance since trying with flashrom ended with it unable to find the rom chip. AM28F010 requires 12V for programming, so it can't be done on the card itself. It must be done externally using an EEPROM programmer, unfortunately.

Reporting success with the Adaptec 1210SA card, just lift the VCC just the way Carlito's done... hehe, Carlito's Way, it went over my head the first time, now it's so obvious 🤣
Actually, I have to say it's the easiest way to do it and also the quality of the card is orders of magnitude above the chinese stuff coming from Ali---- so IMHO it's the best product out there if you want to flash and do some minor surgery to disable the 2K eprom, otherwise I imagine the best card to get would be today the Rabbit Hole one.

Has been very stable for me, recorded a Christmas record in 24/96 on it with Logic 6 on my G4 SP1,25 GHz MDD 2 GB RAM!

So I’m having an odd issue with my flashed Adaptec 1210SA in my Beige G3 with Rev. C ROM running Mac OS 9.2.2. After a cold start, I will always get the alert that the machine was improperly shut down and it runs through a disk check. It seems that when I initiate the Shut Down command, the hard drive is not correctly dismounted. The same does not occur if I choose Restart.

I have tried a couple of different hard drives (one Seagate, one WD) and the same behaviour occurs.

Has anyone seen this issue before?

I have the same problem on my Beige G3 rev A 9.2.2. However, I've not tested it with a 1210SA. I get it in all scenarios described below. SSD is an old Intel 64 GB SATA.

- SD to IDE adapter connected to built in IDE port
- SD to IDE adapter connected to PCI IDE card (133) - don't remember the brand or model
- SSD SATA to IDE connected to built in IDE port
- SSD SATA to IDE connected to PCI IDE card (133)

So maybe it's something about these Macs. They shut down very fast, instantly when releasing the mouse button.

What I'm taking from this is that the problem doesn't have anything to do with the flashed SiI3112 cards, since you mention the problem also occurs on the built-in bus.

Do you just turn off the warning in the General Controls panel and leave it at that?

I wonder if using a formatting tool other than Apple's Drive Setup could be a solution here at all.

Have you tried to put a spinner drive in one of the ide slots? And leave the ssd in of course.
i have this configuration: a 60gb ssd and a 120gb Seagate standard drive via ide that I use as repository. I don’t see this problem.

Actually my SATA drives are spinners. But I just now tried what you suggested, to have an IDE drive connected to the built-in bus. It doesn’t help, unfortunately.

Didn't know about that setting, so I patiently wait each time. This does not happen on my G4 MDD. So far I've not had any damage to the disk in the G3.

Strange, mine does not die immediately. It takes a second to turn off. I thought it was the IDE drive….

What happens if you remove the sata and leave the crappy ide? Just to rule out a problem with the lb

And boot off the IDE drive? I'll clone the OS9 partition so it's using an identical System Folder, and test this out.

So the problem does not occur with a spinner on the internal IDE bus.

Interestingly, with a CD-ROM inserted and mounted on the desktop the problem does not occur. The OS waits for the CD to spin down and unmount, giving the HD time to unmount correctly - so as you say @Carlito I do think the machine is shutting down too fast.

Just to clarify, I meant the issue doesn’t occur when booted from a spinner on the IDE bus with the SATA drive disconnected.

But it does occur when booted from the SATA drive on the SA1210, regardless of whether there’s a spinner connected to the IDE bus or not.

Probably isn't running the ata standby immediate command (0xe0 or 0x94), and waiting for it to complete.

Would it be an ATA command? Remember that drives connected to an (S)ATA PCI card are seen as SCSI devices.
