| Another IIci ROM hack |
Posted by: dougg3 on 2011-09-05 21:08:18 I don't have anything interesting to show pics of yet. The example SIMM I had was from a LaserWriter. I can take pics if I want, but it's probably not that helpful since it's the wrong pinout.
I have actually sent off my first batch of surface mount boards to Seeed Studio for manufacturing. I will put a design that olePigeon comes up with on the next round of boards. I figure that I'll find some major goofup with the first one anyway, so I didn't want to order a bunch of them yet. I'll keep everyone posted on the status of the order! Unfortunately I had to pick Registered Air Parcel so it'll probably take forever to get here...oh well.
We'll see how it goes, and I'll continue playing around with through hole mounting! I could post some pics of what I have so far for the through hole mounting, but it's not quite done yet.

Posted by: bigmessowires on 2011-09-05 22:04:35 It was 17 calendar days from order to delivery, last time I got PCBs from Seeed. That was with the cheapest shipping option. I wrote a mini-review of their boards here: http://www.bigmessowires.com/2011/06/24/tiny-cpu-boards/

Posted by: dougg3 on 2011-09-06 09:51:04 Oh nice! That's not bad at all, hopefully I'll see similar results. Thanks for linking to your review...interesting stuff!

Posted by: olePigeon on 2011-09-07 12:09:33 Any suggestions for a logo before sending out board designs? Something piratey? 🙂
|
Posted by: Trash80toHP_Mini on 2011-09-07 12:36:55 Keira Knightley? 😱)
|
Posted by: olePigeon on 2011-09-07 12:44:07 Does the ROM SIMM draw power? Enough to light up 2 tiny LEDs? I could make the classic skull & crossbones, screened over two tiny red LEDs for the eyes. 😀
|
Posted by: dougg3 on 2011-09-07 13:01:38 Hahaha, that would be awesome. I don't know how much current the SIMM socket can supply (a hardware guy can answer that) but it would definitely feasible to add from a layout standpoint. I think we'd need resistors in series with them to limit current, right? I'm too lazy to look at parts and do calculations on necessary resistance and current draw right now 🙂
That skull and crossbones sounds like a cool idea!
Or you could do a zombie Keira Knightley with red LED eyes! LOL, just kidding.
Order update: the PCBs I ordered are now "In Production" and I got an email saying if they meet requirements they will be shipped in 4-6 working days.

Keira Knightley? 😱) Preferably in that little top she wore to the nightclub in "Bend it Like Beckham"
It won't be very piratey. But rowrrrrr.

Posted by: Trash80toHP_Mini on 2011-09-08 13:24:04 Maybe mix leather bra and war paint from KING ARTHUR with some Flintlock reloads (single shot "speedloaders") crossed pistols and some piratey short breeches! :approve:
|
Posted by: olePigeon on 2011-09-08 17:04:30 So it's not Keira Knightley, but here's a modified Jolly Roger [EPS download here]:

|
Posted by: dougg3 on 2011-09-08 22:15:20 Niiiice! Now I just have to figure out how to add it to the PCB. Unfortunately it looks like FreePCB doesn't allow me to import graphics to put on the silkscreen, but there are tools out there that will "simulate" it with a bunch of tiny text areas. Hopefully it turns out OK!
|
Posted by: olePigeon on 2011-09-09 10:11:55 You can do basic lines and shapes, right? Like putting boxes around certain areas, labeling them, etc.?
So here's a "trace" version of the Jolly Roger. [EPS version here.] I kinda like it better because it's very 80s retro. 😎

Posted by: bigmessowires on 2011-09-09 10:13:48 That's awesome!! I love the via in the skull!
|
Posted by: dougg3 on 2011-09-09 16:25:16 I agree, that's really freaking cool! I think your "trace" design will be a lot easier for me to replicate. I know that better PCB design software can probably just import the EPS directly. I'll try to trace it as well as I can with the line segment stuff.
The footprint editor will let me make stuff like that with lines and curves, so I'll see what I can do.
BTW, here's my latest find, from a seller on Amazon when I got lucky and found it for like $20:

It was originally a library book at USF (South Florida or San Francisco, I guess!) until last year. Not in the greatest condition but considering how hard it is to find the book, I'll gladly take it!
|
Posted by: olePigeon on 2011-09-09 16:31:13 Can your program import EPS any other vector data?
|
Posted by: dougg3 on 2011-09-09 16:33:35 Unfortunately, it can't. That's what I get for using this stuff. I can draw my own footprints inside the app, though. I know that sounds ridiculous, but it's true. No import function for it 🙁

|
Posted by: bigmessowires on 2011-09-09 21:25:10 You can get GttMFH2E from amazon.ca for CDN $29.49: http://www.amazon.ca/Guide-Macintosh-Family-Hardware-Computer/dp/0201524058

Posted by: dougg3 on 2011-09-09 23:03:36 Nice price! You should totally snag up a copy. What's interesting about that link is that Amazon.ca has it and Amazon.com does not have it, yet it ships from the United States. Some things just make no sense at all!
Haha jt, that's awesome! They must be sending it over on a rowboat or something? 😛 Another one of those things that makes no sense!
|
Posted by: bigmessowires on 2011-09-10 10:04:19 Ack! Amazon.ca won't ship computer-related items to a non-Canadian address. :-(
The seller is actually in the USA, but I can't find their direct web site or any other info outside of amazon.ca.
