| Introducing (and interest check) CircuitTalk: LocalTalk for PowerMac G4 |
Posted by: opualuan on 2023-05-19 08:05:39 @kdrone if you have the MDD there is a single screw securing the left tab of the modem connector case. Remove that and pivot it clockwise 30 degrees and pull it away from the case wall. Dealing with the existing wire is another issue, I ended up cutting it. Removal of the processor heatsink is not required but makes this much easier. |

Nope I have a Sawtooth, and I can't see how that little box is connected to the case. Looks like it may be covered by a metal slab?
Anyone with a Sawtooth that has done this before? |

I'll post some photos of the installation process in a short while. It is very straightforward; nothing to fret over. |

Posted by: kdrone on 2023-05-22 12:28:49 Well I got my kit in the mail. That was ridiculously fast considering it was shipped across the pond!!
Got a red one it seems.
Thanks so much @CircuitBored .
Looking forward to those installation pics so I can put this bad boy in. |

That is very strange. Does the serial port work properly otherwise? The iMac was never officially supported by the original Gport driver and the StyleWriter II is ten years its senior so this is a real edge case. I'll help you get it working as best I can! |

I've got a preliminary layout for the Cube version done and am currently engineering a combination of it and a PowerBook variant. It should fit in an iMac G3 too if all goes to plan. |
Posted by: icbrkr on 2023-10-19 09:28:51 I see I'm late to the party like I always am - I could use one of these for a Quicksilver and/or MDD - can I be added to the list? |

Probably just the Pismo and the TiBook to begin with as those are all I have on hand. I'm not sure what the last PowerBook to have a native serial port was.
AFAIK there were basically only three variants of the same modem card on new world G3s and the G4s so the majority of the work to be done is geometric rather than electronic. All the G5s have USB-based modems, potentially the G4 Mini too. |
Posted by: joshc on 2023-10-19 12:01:29 OK, please provsionally put me down for one for a Pismo if you get that working. |
Posted by: CircuitBored on 2024-03-03 04:47:21 I've had a surprise surge of interest in these kits over the past month so I think that I should post an update.
I wrote a horribly long and overly detailed explanation of why this project has moved so slowly but it was totally over the top so I've decided to just boil it down to a more honest, concise form.
I care about this project a lot but I care about my life and happiness more. I underwent major surgery last year and two of my close friends have died in the last six months. I'm now on the mend and working on CircuitTalk again when I have the energy but my new job takes precedence, of course.
I am hoping to get some new PCBs in in April, test and distribute those, and then hand over production of these kits to more capable hands that will hopefully take care of the demand going forward.
Thank you so much for all of your interest, patience, and support. It really does motivate me to keep going. |

@CircuitBored may be interested to make the full set 🙂 I had him in mind and I posted here because of him.
I do like that it is called a stealth serial port. Ah, Steve Jobs and slots. |
