Using Magneto Optical drives on vintage 68k Macs

Something else to look at would be the 5.25" version. The drives tend to be a bit more expensive, but the media is much cheaper.

Used 2.3GB drive for $90:

Hello!

Does anyone buy one of these ?

It seems very cheap for a NOS drive, no ? 😵 🤔

It would be great to be able to put one in my 6100 ... 🤩

I have a huge box of these. All new old stock. I’ve been trying to figure out how to best get rid of them.

@zefrenchtoon That one is IDE, not SCSI.

And here's the SCSI version of the drive you were just looking at for $90, just $10 more:

Sorry and thank you. I wanted to share this one of course. 😓
I’m looking at the 1.3 models because already I own a 1.3 one in USB2 to connect on my modern machines. 🙂
Also, as I already said, I’ve got an external 640 but it seems to work sometimes good and sometimes bad. 😕
I have to try to disassemble it to check if I can extract the drive itself to connect it as an internal one.

Are you located in Europe ? 😇
Are they IDE or SCSI models ? 🤔

The big quantity I have are IDE. The scsi ones I have, I want and I purchased for ridiculously high prices on eBay.

I am not in Europe and I won’t ship outside of North America.

I’m not looking at 5.25 ones because I already have about 20 disks in 230/640 with old data one them and my goal would be to replace at least one floppy drive in one of my Mac.

@zefrenchtoon Ah, OK. That used 2.3GB one looks good to me. If you're going to mount it in a floppy slot, you'll probably need some shims or something similar to get it to line up perfectly. However, I've only done it with auto-inject floppies, and not manual inject. So I don't know if the manual inject will line up better or not. Will certainly make it easier to get a disk out with the cut-out on the bezzel, that's for sure.

I haven't attempted to line them up, but I would imagine it should fit. Like you mention, some shims might be necessary. I was going to possibly use a 3d printed adapter if necessary, on ones I wanted to convert.

In my quest, I've found this one (a bit dusty btw) but somewhat cheap and in Europe. 🙂

Then you should buy it now or else I will. I have a large collection of MO disks too...

How much do you want for them individually? I have a US postal address.

Every now and then, I’m able to pick up 128MB, 230MB, and 640MB 3.5”MO SCSI drives on eBay for $20 or so each. In 2022 I picked up 3 drives for $20 (or less). Latest one that I bought was a brand new sealed 640MB along with a used 230MB, and it was $20 free shipping. If you watch you can often find deals.

You just have to search multiple terms as sometimes people don’t describe them properly. Right now there’s a Fujitsu external 1.3GB MO drive that is labeled as a “cassette reader” for example.

It’s listed as “untested” and it does not include any cables (not even the power adapter). I did get an offer of $44 by watching it for a while so you might be able to make an offer on it.

Thanks but it is located in the USA and between shipping fees and customs ... the final price will explode to get it in France. 🙁

With the new legislation on custom fees for product not coming from EU, it is difficult now to buy something outside EU.

640MB USB magneto optical drive, and 26x lower capacity disks, $128 USD with free shipping. If you work out the math, it’s about $3 a disk and $50 for the drive. Not a bad deal.

Same seller, 35 MO disks for $98, free shipping:

And 27x 640MB for $104 free shipping:

I've found a nice internal 640 MO drive in Japan with a 8100 bezel:

I guess this would also work in a Quadra 800
