10. Power Macintosh 7100
It should have a PDS card in it - service source says not to run them without a PDS card or a PDS terminator.

I haven’t had a super good look at it yet. It’s not an AV version though, plain 7100/66. Have to check to make sure the PRAM battery is gone, seller said he had pulled them from all the macs he had though. It’s got a SCSI drive in it so it might go right into Mac OS once I get a video solution set up.

HDI-45 crisis averted! It’s got a video card. Sweet!

Wow you cleaned up! Definitely liking the mechanical KB and IIsi. Tecra brings back memories, they were great in their day. Does that one have docking capability?
Posted by: 3lectr1cPPC on 2023-06-10 16:49:43
For sure! I don't think I could have done better honestly. Tecra does have a docking port I think. What options were available for these?
Posted by: ClassicGuyPhilly on 2023-06-10 16:52:05
Don't recall specific options but the docks were ridiculously large!
Posted by: 3lectr1cPPC on 2023-06-10 16:53:10
So I'm guessing Duo-style expansion capabilities then? I need to get more into that sort of thing. Dell made a bunch of those too for Latitudes but yet the only dock I've got is a port replicator for a series of HP and Compaq laptops I don't even own any models from lol.

Also, I just looked up the specs for the A22p ThinkPad and now I'm really hoping I can get it to work. Apparently these shipped with 1600x1200 displays standard!!!

The A22p LIVES! As I hoped the RAM was just missing, not some other issue at hand. needs a hard drive though. I can’t believe it was only $5!!!

The 7100/66 looks to have the HPV video card in it, which is decent. Does do multisync video up to at least 16-bit. Since the 7100 uses the IIvx style case, if you want the older style auto-inject Sony drive, all you need is one of those with the SE-style floppy drive bracket and the case lid from a P600, IIvi, IIvx, or Centris 650. Did that with the 7100/80 that I owned back in 2000-03...

Cool, good to know! I’m going to get it open today and have a closer look at the insides. Make sure the PRAM battery has been pulled and such. Did see it open at the meet though, had an IBM SCSI drive and looked clean. No cap leaks yet, will be doing that ASAP though. Not looking forward to the 26 total caps on its logic board though…

Good thing I checked the PRAM battery! Seller said he had pulled them all from the compacts he had for sale but I guess he didn’t pull from his desktops, or at least not this one. Close save!

Also the video card is the Apple HPV card.

No HDI-45 adapter available?
Posted by: 3lectr1cPPC on 2023-06-12 08:22:53
Nope. Waiting for a DB15 to VGA adapter with dip switches to come in. This and the IIsi I bought are the oldest desktop macs I own now. Next oldest is a Sawtooth G4.

I power tested the 7100 and it chimed, hard disk spun up (has extremely loud bearings) and seemed to be fine. Subsequent attempts started the system too but it never chimed again besides for that first time. Guess we’ll see when the video adapter comes in.

*An* Apple HPV card - there are two types 🤣

It will be the type that has 1MB soldered and takes 4x 256k VRAM SIMMs, unless someone pinched one out of an 8100 (the 8100 one has 2MB soldered and takes 4x 512k VRAM SIMMs).

One without switches will most likely work on an 8100 - its only the really early stuff that is supper picky (and needs 10 switches).

Great info, thanks! Got one with switches for the picky IIsi, and any other 68ks I end up with in the future.

Lots of debombing happening. I’ve so far pulled the batts from the 7100 of course, and also the Latitude C640 and the Tecra. Of course, all the green varta batteries were leaking, even the C640’s which would have been made in 2002. Luckily no horrible damage!

Don't forget the caps on the video card, I've discovered that those are really starting to suffer from cap leaking. I have a pile of dead cards as a result. If it works recap the video card ASAP to keep it working.

For sure will be doing that. They all look fine to me for now but this whole system is getting a recap ASAP. Might leave the PSU alone unless it dies though. Bit concerned that it stopped chiming though, any idea why that may be?
And I know, I know. Not much troubleshooting to be done until I get video hooked up.

That is concerning, really hard to say on that without video. The 7100 is a really good machine to tinker with though, good find and highly recommended I hope you can get it working.
