Adtron SCSI Compact Flash drive?

I don't have any other size cards to try.

I don't see 8GB cards as being cheaper, at least on eBay. I got my new 4GB, Transcend brand, for $6.00, free shipping.

I'm in the Great White North. I wish I could get a 4GB for $6. Here, a 4GB or 8GB Transcend is $16 plus shipping. I guess "cheaper" is a relative term 🙁

For Canadians:

2GB 133x $8 +10shipping

4GB 133x $10 +7 shipping

4GB 233x $12 +10 shipping

8GB 133x $14 +10 shipping

Of course I have found that small things like this are much better ordered as part of an order with other larger things or during a free shipping deal. That only becomes an issue if you have nothing else that you need. but a CF card is handy enough that you might toss one or two in your cart with other items during a sale and save it for later.

NCIX.com and Newegg.ca have been stocking fewer and fewer CF cards though! There may come a time when you need one and there are few to pick from.

It is not found at all by patched HD tools. Hard disk toolkit sees it as a normal scsi drive.

Here is an adapter to turn this into one of those clippers.

Thanks MacJunky. I was looking at TigerDirect and their prices were almost the same. I keep forgetting about NewEgg even thought I've purchased some items from them before.

Anyone want to try one of these SD to CF adapters?

Hopefully the adapter works in IDE mode.

Also has anyone tried to see if their CF cards mount on another Mac using a standard USB reader?

I'll be trying one out. I've been in casual lookout mode for an SD->CF adapter and it will be interesting to see just how far back in the lineup this will work, if at all. PB190 would be great, but I doubt it.

Found something interesting:

How cool would it be to show piccies from a digital camera(?) or smart phone on a 68k PowerBook over WiFi with a pair of these? 😀

The Pismo would work great, but it's too bad it probably won't ever work in OS9 on the Sonnetized 1400. :-/

Hardware wise I bet it will work fine. Just finding a program to make it be used in an older system may be an issue. When I get some time, I will try again to get mine to work in the 100. It goes sad mac as the HD toolkit is not supported by less than an 030 processor. If silverlining will see it and format it I am in like Flynn.

The auction info says it supports "True-IDE" mode, so it should work in a CF-to-IDE adapter with standard SD storage cards. Don't know about the Wi-Fi part, SDIO is a different beast overall.

I have a copy of FWB HD Toolkit on one of my external drives. I recall running it on my Portable, so maybe its old enough to support 68k machines. I'll have to pull it up and check the version number. Generally the 68k machines don't like SCSI Manager 4.3 drivers. Apple's own docs say you shouldn't even use later versions of Apple HD SC Setup on these machines.

Ya since the 100 is basically the portable, that would be great as version 2.5 is way too new, although if you boot your portable off the internal drive and just use an external it may not work. But I am still hugely curious.

Posted by: NJRoadfan on 2013-10-16 08:29:41
I have had no problems booting the Portable off of the external drive. I have also booted a Macintosh SE I once owned using the drive.

Dang! I wish I'd snagged one. 🙁

Not to hijack this thread but:

Hopefully the one from newegg (that I just ordered) will support "True-IDE" mode as well. Am I reading you correctly that this ought to work as a boot drive for the PCMCIA PowerBooks?

Here's another one that doesn't list any OS limitations:

http://www.staples.com/Toshiba-PFW008U-1ABW-8GB-FlashAir-Wireless-SD-Memory-Card/product_IM1RU7782

Win7 is conspicuously absent in the auction I linked above, but I'm guessing there would have been drivers developed somewhere for Linux.

edit: Four pages in just nine days, this thread is HOT, HOT, HOT!

You can also use Hard Disk Speedtools 3.6, it only requires System 7 & A Mac SE or above, so it will work with a 68000 processor, and it is far newer than anything else we could use. The last version was released in only November, 2003

The 2nd CF slot I believe connects as lun1 which of course mac doesnt support.

Posted by: Paralel on 2013-10-16 13:44:15
Has anyone tested it?

Posted by: Macdrone on 2013-10-16 13:55:05
Both slots work fine (at least with matched cards). I put 2 512's in it and formatted to 977 mb total with no issuers on a PowerBook 540c with hard disk toolkit. I was just trying to use it in a 100 but I may just keep my eye out for a real drive for it.

Posted by: NJRoadfan on 2013-10-16 15:21:52
I pulled out the external HD and confirmed that it is running FWB Hard Disk Toolkit 1.3.1 Personal Edition from 1993. The application and driver works and boots fine on a B&W 68000 machine. The ReadMe that I found for 1.6 indicates it runs on System 6, so it might be compatible as well

Posted by: Macdrone on 2013-10-16 16:26:37
Well now I just need to get myself a legitimate copy.

Posted by: NJRoadfan on 2013-10-16 16:54:52
Good luck. This copy appears to have come with this "Club Mac" branded SCSI drive. Oddly there were no utilities left on the "Power User" drive that has System 6 on it.
