| So, I bought a portable… |
Posted by: techknight on 2023-10-31 12:36:33 its because the DC input goes through a resistor... need full battery voltage to switch on the FET |
Posted by: imactheknife on 2023-11-06 14:14:58 Ok, so got new battery today and popped it in. New 9 volt and she is golden, works great. So now i have to figure out how to get a system onto blue scsi. So when not in use, or while using it with new battery is it needing to be plugged in or only when battery needs a charge? |
Posted by: LaPorta on 2023-11-06 15:34:14 Lead acid batteries do not like to be discharged at all. They need to be kept up at all times if possible. You can either keep it continuously charged in the Portable, or as I do, I keep it on an automotive-style battery maintainer when I have the Portable in storage. One not-so-great thing about the Portable is that it pretty much draws as much in sleep as it does shut down: there’s no true “off”. The battery in mine will fully discharge in three days if not plugged in in some manner. |

Ok, so good to keep plugged in with original power adaptor? Either that or remove the battery when you're not using it (and also remove the 9V). It really depends on how long you're keeping the thing on the shelf. I don't use mine a whole lot (once every few weeks), so I don't have a 9V in it, and I don't put the battery in it until I use it. I don't care if settings are lost, it's really the only reason to keep the batteries in. The 9V isn't even required, as it's merely there to power the system while you have the main battery out (like while swapping it). An SLA battery should be fine without a recharge for 4-5 months, so as long as you're using the Portable / recharging the battery a few times within that span of time, you're fine. |

Ok, excellent, thanks for the info. Is system 6 the best for this? Only have 1 big meg of ram lol |
Posted by: LaPorta on 2023-11-06 17:20:08 I'd advocate for 6 with that. 7 will be a massive kludge with that paltry amount of RAM. Stick with 6. Any chance for you to find one of those RAM cards around? |
Posted by: desertrout on 2023-11-06 18:40:38 Agree re: System 6. Also worth consideration: https://androda.work/product/macintosh-portable-7-megabyte-ram-card/ |

Will have to buy the ram card when more are in stock. This portable almost boots instantly with blue scsi, unreal.. have system 6 bare bones on it right now. |
Posted by: LaPorta on 2023-11-06 19:49:47 They are in stock, actually. Just buy the simple one. No need for the switch one since you have a non-backlit. |
Posted by: imactheknife on 2023-12-19 06:51:28 So I finally was able to install a “full” 6.0.8 system on this. I dont have a “brightness” slider but a contrast slider which does nothing. All other control panels seem good. Is it supposed to be contrast? |
Posted by: 3lectr1cPPC on 2023-12-19 06:54:34 You're gonna need the Brightness Control Panel v1.3 IIRC. I'll try to find a link for it.
Edit: Portable control panel, sorry.

Link: https://macgui.com/downloads/?file_id=20773 Ok thanks!! So this is weird, i opened up the control panel on my iBook g3 clamshell and it actually controls the brightness lol.. i am using the ibook to transfer files to floppy. |
Posted by: imactheknife on 2023-12-19 07:51:41 Well, no change. Still shows contrast. |
Posted by: LaPorta on 2023-12-19 07:53:04 This should work, however, that control panel looks different than the one I have on my Portable. Hold on and let me find the one I have. |
Posted by: LaPorta on 2023-12-19 07:55:43 This is the one from System 6.0.7. This should work...unless there is a hardware issue. |

Posted by: 3lectr1cPPC on 2023-12-19 08:49:52 You have an M5126 portable, right? |
Posted by: imactheknife on 2023-12-19 08:55:36
You have an M5126 portable, right? no 5120, lol guess that makes sense now...good grief.. |
Posted by: 3lectr1cPPC on 2023-12-19 08:56:29 So you don't have a backlight. No version of the brightness panel is going to work. |
