Won a Performa 5210CD, importing it. What should I look out for?

It makes a bit of a zap noise whenever the tube starts. I don't know if that's normal or not but usually it's not as pronounced on any other CRT I've worked with.
eMacs make a loud "DONK" noise, iMacs sound more like a typical CRT, this sounds like it's screeching for a second.

This is perfectly normal in my experience with the 5400. If you upload a recording of the sound I'll be able to tell you for sure. Unless the flyback makes any further noise or you see any issues on the display then you are probably fine for the time being.

If you plan on using the 5210CD for long periods then you must replace the fan. It's a big job but it is vital to the survival of these thermally compromised machines.

Yeah the tube itself appears to be fine. I'll seemingly have to take the computer apart to fix this mess though, which is gonna be a daunting task too...
If only someone made reproduction espresso cases?? Not telling anyone to go to work right away but it's just a thought

There is a good plastic solvent called Weld On 2354 (Think its that?) which will "melt" the plastic together.

You should know that super glue does not work very well on the plastic used in the 5X00 series. I recommend mixing super glue with baking soda to make "acrylate cement", which is much stronger but sets very quickly, making it harder to apply. However, once applied and cured it is extremely strong and bonds well to the plastic. You can also sand it flush once it has dried, which might be handy if you plan on repainting your shattered 5210CD at some point.

I'd wager that we sadly won't ever see reproduction espresso cases as they simply aren't very desirable machines.

So luckily, I am working on getting a refund for the item, hopefully with how much it was to ship this damn thing.
However, it isn't the end of the world! I plan to piece this together with the baking soda+superglue setup, and maybe painting this a very light aquamarine-blue color as to match the labels better. With black paint it would just stick out a little too much, plus I thought of the very light aquamarine look being a bit relaxing in a sense...

Using a couple of pictures from the auction listing, I sort-of visualized the color I'd like it to be. It's supposed to be some sort of a very light aquamarine/blue instead of some fugly beige-yellow color...

Mine does strange zap noise too. Really do not know if this is ok or no … listen for your self

maybe you could find a 5200 or 5400 locally with a nice case and transplant? I dunno. shipping these things suck. 🙁

as for the noise, could be the degausser when you power on. if your screen starts to shrink/expand and/or go light/dark, then you know its the flyback for sure.

Took the machine apart. Plan to add a 3.3V regulator where needed so I can use my 6360's motherboard. I also took the fan out, and it appears to be a normal 92mm fan that seems to work fine? Obviously I would need to replace it anyway if I'm correct...

I shipped out a similar machine (eBay auction) a few years ago- a Performa 575- and also learned the hard way just how difficult it is to ship one of those old all-in-one Macs! I think that the trick is to put the machine monitor-down in the shipping box.....after you've laid down a boat load of bubble wrap or packing foam, and after you've thoroughly bubble wrapped the machine itself.

I of course didn't do that, and when the 575 got to it's destination....well, let's just say that I ended up given the dude a refund!

So much easier to ship out one of the compact Macs. I actually just got an SE/30 from Japan my self off of Buyee...and it got here intake, and with a lot of good stuff inside it.

Not only that, face down bubble wrapped PLUS double boxed. Got to put it first in a heavy duty box, then pack that inside another box.
