Posted by: Bunsen on 2012-12-14 05:58:22What exactly is involved in disabling the Dock's Declaration ROM?Removing it if it's socketed, or snipping the (IIRC) chip enable pin if it's not. The LCD Cable is the most un-hackable thing of all! :-/If it became necessary, I would suggest having a male-to-female flat flex cable (FFC) extender made up. On the other hand, it may be easier and more reliable to make up extensions for other connections, such as Duo->Dock, Dock->Gemini, or even Gemini->Nubus. Then one has a bunch of other options for re-arrangement. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the 2300c MoBo can be sandwiched between the solder sides of the Dock's Logic board and the nearest of the two NuBus Cards.How does the Duo->Dock connection work in that arrangement? | |

Yesterday, surfing the old threads, I found this: http://myoldmac.net/share/RC07/MacClassicII_256grayscale.php which is almost exactly the hack I imagined, minus the facelift. Of course joining in on the Mac hacking 20 years late means nothing I dream up is going to be original. Can't decide between the Apple 12" grayscale hack above, or finding a 9" grayscale monitor to shove in. Either way I'll have to figure out how to get the video signal off of the board, which means soldering - at which I am possibly the worst. I hate soldering, but if I'm gonna try stuff like this I guess I better learn 🙂 | |

(such posts violate the rulz! :lol: ) . . . it was the first thing that occurred to me when the iPad was announced with a 9" screen . . .. . . but with a black Racing Stripe groove routed all the way around where the DVD Slot is hacked and the bottom section painted DuoDock Gray . . . . . . with a DuoDock motor sliding the MacQuarium mounted behind it back and then forward again when I insert & remove the iPad! }🙂 . . . in typing this up, a couple of thoughts occurred to me . . . . . . a Zip should probably be mounted in the black band along with modern I.O.instead of a the DVD Hack I've already done. . . . I've always wanted to put a slot loader wher the cooling vents are located . . . . . . underneath that could be a nice cozy spot for an ubuntuAtomicMacHack™ of the long homeless Atom NetTop board . . . . . . hrmmm . . . ;D edit: I just knew I was going to need that quote for continuity when somebody posted while i was busy composing this evil plan. | Posted by: Mk.558 on 2012-12-15 14:06:54 Personally I would be inclined to find a display that fits inside the default bezel area -- no fancy cutting procedures + cleanup required. And you'll get about the same output anyways -- if you had 7.6.1, which is what my Duo 230/100 runs, you're not gaining much from 1024x768 over 800x600. 640x480 is as we know, perfectly usable in these older systems. Alternative? Small display inside with a video out to a larger monitor.    | |
| Posted by: Trash80toHP_Mini on 2012-12-15 22:08:11 I've found something close to what I'd consider as a candidate for this 'PadHack, the Archos 80 G 9 seems to fit the bill for me.  It's tough to tell from the pics, but with a 4:3 1024 x 768 pixel 8" LCD, the image size should be 6.4" x 4.8" and very close to the size of the image of the 9" Periscope for playing period appropriate games and apps in color on my ZipPlus under minivmac. The left edge may protrude slightly in order to center the display, but that'll just make for convenient removal. With the DuoDockMotor/Sliding MacQuarium Hack, I don't even need to buy the Tablet until prices for a used one hit rock bottom on eBay. A wooden stand-in with full color printed appliques will work just fine until then. It can lean that up against the side of the Macquarium/ubuntuAtomicX-MacHack™ for me to show off its Pad/Docking features for the nonce. It'll be KVM'd to the 20" 1600x1200 LCD Pivot/NetBook Online WorkStation and get some of my pet plastic fish out of their shoe box and into water again at the same time! I can swap the hacked Zip's guts with the matching translucent USB Zip and mount the Laptop Slotloader DVD-RW and adapter under the chin. I'll need to make the clear plexi chassis act as a rain hat for the real goodies inside, just in case, but that's no biggie. It looks like I can leave one of the DOA A/Bs inside for looks and power switching. I'm kinda likin' this approach! }🙂 | |

I'd rather have the MacQuarium anyway, that and the Atom NetTop board running ubuntu are really the only useful the added complexity of the DuoDockingPad is an added bonus for me. This is what I do for a hobby, it's not suupposed to make sense . . . . . . then it'd just be work! 😛 | |

I know almost nothing about this sort of thing, so forgive the following if it sounds stupid. Whatever switches off the screen in the DeclRom would need changed (maybe as simple as changing a line of code from an =No to an =Yes?). But how do you access that code and how might you go about changing it permanently? If this is for the hacking/ coding athlete only, and requires serious equipment and know-how, then that in itself would be useful to know, as I will then cheerfully be able to give up on the whole business, reassemble my 280c and 2300c, and get on with other things. | |
