Toon's good finds ... and the lost ones
Posted by: zefrenchtoon on 2026-05-29 13:56:31
Few days ago, I took few minutes (who said hours ?) to finally check my Classic’s batteries.
I own 2 Classics:
The first one is … my first Macintosh from when I was 8. 😍
The second one came from the University where my sister is working. The university was going to scrape a bunch of old computers so I saved it with a Yikes. 😇

But I never took the time to open them and I was not equipped to do it.

So … two Classics stored in an attic in an old French abbaye. Imagine the result …🫣

Look at these motherboards and batteries !!

No battery damage ! Unbelievable !! 🤩
They will get proper recap asap 😮‍💨

Once I closed my Classics without their respective batteries, I though that I had to scavenge some RAM sticks for my 475 and my 6100 from some of my other Macs stored in the attic.
First, I’ve got one from my old 475 then I saw a 630 and though that it could be a good idea to check it too in case of a faulty RAM stick.
So I got it, opened it very carefully (perfect condition, no plastic broken on this one) and got its motherboard out. But before that, something retained my attention. I’m pretty sure that 630 does not have the little hole made to let PCI card bracket stick out.
I though I was wrong, nevermind.
So, once the mb out, I took one RAM stick … and while I was thinking « but where is the 68LC040 », I saw a chip marked with XPC603. 😵‍💫

Then, close to it was a strange stick (to me). I thought « this should be the ROM or a cache stick » … and I saw chips on it marked as « Intel » and « Flash ». 😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫

I took it out and checked the other side and now, I need you to tell me what exactly is this stick. 😶‍🌫️

So I have a 630 from my father’s laboratory which contains a 6200 motherboard. Never knew that ! And I was he’s referee when he needed to buy computers so I’m lost about this one’s history.

Answering to myself ... this is a "standard" Cache/ROM SIMM from a 6200 ...
I had read this topic but did not remember about this special SIMM. This makes me think that @dougg3 & @Jockelill 's LC PDS programmer may be upgraded with another slot to be able to flash it too ? (and / or uses it as a cache/ROM stick for a 475 ? maybe this is a stupid idea ...)

Let's talking software now ...
Recently, I've got some opportunities to get some software in box.
Of course, some of them makes me thinking about @Durosity 😉

(there is laso a totally twisted CD in loose hidden in one of these boxes)

Pretty proud to have found French version of AppleTalk Internet Router and a typically french Apple MiniModem in a VHS box.

Yes, is the short answer to this 🙂. What has stopped me (mainly) so far is lack of source for the necessary slot in connector for the ROMs. If you or anyone else, has a source, it might be possible to make an upgrade to the programmer, it would require also some other stuff to make it happen since the PPC have a 64 bit data path, but that should be possible to handle.

I forgot to tell you that I also found a bunch of old floppies and some of them would please you … as soon as I got a greaseweazel, I will properly image them of course.

imo an awful name for a book as it hijacks search results when looking for resources on LWII repairs 😠

neat concept though

Guess what I’ve found … 👀

I don’t even know if I will keep it or not 😅

Btw, anyone know if this is « normal » (third picture attached) 🤔❓

Yes sir !
And I have no use of it as I don’t own a 7200 nor a 4400 😵‍💫
I would like to put it in my Yikes but I don’t have the external cable to get the video out.
I think I have read that the Houdini ones are not compatible so I can not use my 6100 one.

Sorry, I was out from my home so I could not check and answer ...

So I've checked and ... Yes ! (in Apple Magazine n°10 from september/october 1993)

There is a 5 pages article on Dialogys software 🙂

Are you interested ? (it is in french btw ...)

Answering to myself: I've found out your particular interest on the Garden so I've uploaded the article there as a "Manual" along with your isos:

As you can see, it is not the same magazine as the one you shared as a "screenshot". Mine is a "new edition" (nouvelle édition).
