I have an external IDE drive enclosure if you'd like me to image it, or a G3 available. But probably try the target disk mode suggestion first.

Ive never even came across anything about a system 7.7! Got to save that drive! That would have to mean a 7.7 installer is floating around too...

Your drive has 800MB available. Are the contents greater than 800MB? If not, you could pop DiskCopy 6.3 onto it, create a blank image just larger than the size of the files, and just drag the entire disk icon onto the mounted image. From there, use something like FTP to get it off the drive. Won't be an 'image' of the drive, but it would get the files off...

If you're going to be messing around with a lot of vintage hardware like this, I recommend some sort of vintage removable drive, which can also connect to a bridge machine. It makes imaging devices a lot more convenient. It's too bad you are so very far away from me, or I'd just stop by with a Jaz drive and image it for you.

Better to have someone ship a SCSI Zip100 to you for drag-n-drop via Iomega Guest than trust the drive itself to the mails?

Can you check whether that Platinum UI is its native UI? I've seen some System 7 Macs in computer museums that were around that numeric range and people thought it was a System 8 prototype, and when I browsed around a bit it turned out someone had just installed Aaron to override the icons and window borders. Was very disappointed when the people from the museum didn't even seem to care.

Definitely from Apple I sent the drive to @Johnnya101 he should get it Tuesday or Wednesday, he’s gonna see if he can copy all the contents from it but yes it appears to be close to system 8. Apparently the name of the computer is Performa Power Macintosh? So I have no clue what it really is because Apple could’ve slapped that barcode in the case any time so it’s weird and I haven’t poked around too, too much on it but there’s definitely some very interesting and secret informing there.

Nobody said Apple folks didn't like to install appearance modification INITs occasionally 😀

Wonder what the gestalt machine ID number is? Something like Tattletech should be able tell you.

If its a prototype 6360 or 6400 I think it would be 58:

It’s 58 I know I looked at system overview and that’s one of the things I remember

That seems pretty definitive that is a prototype "Alchemy" board for a 6360 or 6400.

The fact its in a desktop case makes me think its more likely a prototype 6360, but I guess Apple could have been testing the faster 6400 series boards in the desktop case, maybe even considered shipping faster desktop case versions

6360/160: desktop, 603e at 160Mhz
6400/180: tower, 603e at 180Mhz
6400/180: tower, 603e at 200Mhz

Didn’t check but I’m pretty sure it probably was, gotta wait to get the drive back to see.

Do you have another IDE drive? You could try installing regular OS 8 or something.
