Can Letter sized paper be used in the Legal cassette for original LaserWriter?

Don’t want to hijack the thread but I have a question. In the page setup on my Mac, there is an option for Letter and Small Letter. I also noticed that it defaults to Small Letter. What’s this about?

I think small letter has larger margins, as in the printable area of the page is smaller.

Yeah, I think that’s the only difference. But now I wonder about why it’s even an option. Maybe back then some printers were cropping text a bit or something.

I vaguely remember reading in a PostScript manual from the 80s that the original LW and LW us didn't actually have quite enough ram to hold an entire page of some size. I know it can hold an entire A4 page, so it could be that it can't hold an entire letter page. I'll have to do some googling to see if I can track down the source for this.

Letter size is fine. Legal size is a problem.
