A Lisa would be cool to play with for a short time, but an Apple II would be better for long term enjoyment (IMHO). I agree... I imagine having a Lisa would be about as much as having a Mac Plus. Not that I'd turn down a free one, mind you!
Of course I'm biased... I enjoy programming in Applesoft and [a little] 6502 assembly -- the Mac/Lisa side doesn't offer such an easy entry into programming.

The B&H was a nice find. The closest that I ever came to one was at a computer recycling depot in Calgary. I snagged the drives, but couldn't find the computer itself.
While I agree that the Mac doesn't provide as easy an entry level to programming, it does have more sophisticated high level compilers and assorted programming tools. So you can do fancier stuff and debugging that fancy stuff is easier.
Granted, Opus ][ does offer a nice set of compilers.

I don't have an Apple II-series computer anymore, but I used to have an Apple //c when I was a kid. That was my first REAL computer. Before that I had an Aquarius 1 but I don't count that. 😀
I'm still looking to come across either an old IIe, //c, or IIGS. 🙂

and it actually gets used a wee bit too.
it doesnt matter how long i have hung around here i am still stunned at the number of computers that some people actually have in their posession.
i have 11 plus a few handhelds - and that seems excessive - how you all do it still amazes me.

Keep in mind that the survey asks about the *oldest* Apple II in your collection. So over all there may be more IIe's.
Though I will admit to being surprised at how many of us are on the older end of the spectrum.

but yeah quadra i know that IIgs' ran gsos and not macos...because i had one 😛
and i don't remember what the vga card was, we donated it about 13-14 years ago and i haven't seen it since so i have no idea what the specifics are. i just remember the HD size because it was full and therefore caused me much annoyance 😛

Any ADB keyboard should work, though I don't know if any software would actually use the extra keys.
A Mac monitor will not work. The IIgs drives the monitor at NTSC frequencies, so it has more in common with the Amiga in that respect.

The good news is that the IIgs has a composite video port, so you have easy alternatives. Mind you, GS/OS is barely tolerable without the crispness of the IIgs monitor. On second thought, GS/OS is barely tolerable, period! I used to have a 7 or 8 MHz TWGS, and GS/OS was quite nice, thank-you. Without it though, it is not tolerable!
I have wired up a cable for the IIgs to use the RGB on Commodore monitors. It gives a crisp image.

You shouldn't have too much trouble finding one, they're pretty common (even the Woz signature model). The problem is that without extra memory and some kind of mass storage, the IIgs isn't much more than a fast IIc.

there were also expansion cards available which could bump the IIgs up to around 18MHz iirc.

I have a few Apple machines.....
2 IIe, both early versions (no number pad) and with Duodisks and monitors, one is in original boxes (not sure if original to that machine though).
2 IIc, both complete with the small monochrome monitors.
1 GS Woz edition with 3.5" & 5.25" external FD units.
