Mac II Series vs Quadra 700

Posted by: omidimo on 2017-02-28 16:03:28 I had an eBay search setup with the part number (which I can't recall now), and I landed one for $50ish. The Apple one is quite common, but the DayStar 100mhz one is a bit of a unicorn. I replaced the thermal paste as the card gets very hot, I used some left over Arctic Silver, but I am not sure it made a difference.

It can be seen sitting next to his desk when both Ray Arnold and John Hammond are in the shot when they discuss shutting down the systems, although it is not very obvious. There's also an Indigo Elan seen near Ray Arnold's desk. And the big red-glowing pillars that are the Thinking Machines CM-5 in the back, which is the only computer ever mentioned by name (Mr. DNA mentions it in his introduction video).

Although, is there some way in which the Q700 onboard video is better than the Q650's? Yes. The Q650/800 only support 1MB of VRAM and a max of 16 bit color depth. The 700 can take 2MB and does 24 bit color. (It actually won't do 16 bit.) The main advantage the 650/800 has over the 700 is its use of 72 pin simms, which allows them to be easily upgraded to up to 136MB of RAM using relatively easy-to-find 32MB FPM SIMMs. The 700 maxes at 68MB (4MB onboard + one bank of 30 pin sockets) using the same RAM as the Q900/950. (And most Mac II-family machines.) Granted, for what the machines are really capable of in this day and age 68MB is probably fine. I ran A/UX on a Q650 with 72MB and it was more than enough.

There's a site I found a long while back that's pretty good about finding computers in movies/TV called Starring the Computer and while they don't have every movie or TV show covered they do a fairly decent job at the ones they do.

Back to the topic at hand, you've picked the right machine between the Quadra 700 and the 650. I've owned both and the 700 just had something about it that made it feel more "special" than the somewhat generic feeling 650.

Posted by: james_w on 2017-03-01 12:20:23 Gotta throw in my vote for the Q700 - I've got an American one and a European one and they're both great - especially with the little stick out feet! It's actually the main Mac I use (besides my Mac mini), to back up everything else to, to store old software on, and I do all my HyperCard development on it too.

Exactly, and it's 50% the reason I want to get a Quadra 700, the other 50% being just the fact that it is a 68k Mac I'd love to own anyways. The film's fairly realistic use of technology has always made it just that notch better to me, something that's hard to do since the film is amazing in its own right! 🙂

Posted by: Johnnya101 on 2017-03-02 07:00:20 Hahaha oh well! Gotta get one at some point... Anyways, found not one, but two! I've got the option of a regular 700, or a 700 case with 650 board... I don't know which! Probably... the 650 since it's faster but the 700 IS original.
