Macintosh SE/30 Triple Threat
Posted by: bregard on 2026-01-07 12:22:54
An SE/30 with ethernet and 32MB of RAM running OS 7.1 is perfection to me.

I also like an SE with dual floppies and a skinny SCSI HD on top, especially with a Radius 68020 upgrade.

Did he order the greyscale upgrade?
What I am looking at right now:
Duelspark Twin Card Adapter For SE/30 Stratos Technology (ordered)
DayStar Turbo 040 40MHz MC68040RC40 PDS Accelerator (have it)
30Video VGA Color Video PDS Card (ordered)

Looking for something like the suggested ZuluSCSI Pico Slim (need 5Ghz).

that will be difficult... the radio in the rp2040W only supports 2.4ghz operation

I am new to this too. Yours looks like a fun project. Interested in how it all turns out. I also want to source an SE/30 at some point, and mess around with it. Posting here to mark this thread and learn.

Raspberry Pi Pico 2 W (RP2350) should support 5Ghz no options?

No, it only has a 802.11n/2.4 GHz Wi-Fi radio.

I recommend the ZuluSCSI Pico Slim... It's far sturdier than the crappy case they throw in with the db25 bluescsi2 clones...
it's also far more compact... less likely to get caught on something and snap in half.
I second that recommendation. I have about a half-dozen Pico Slims sitting on the back of classic macs. Appletalk over Wifi has some minor issues, but it basically works and makes it quite easy to move files around.

OK. Where I'm at so far...
Macintosh SE/30, System 7.5.5, 128MB RAM, Fully recapped, MODE32 7.5, 2GB physical SCSI disk
Stratos Technology PCBA TwinSpark Dual Slot PDS Adapter - Apple Macintosh SE/30
DayStar Turbo 040 40MHz MC68040RC40 PDS Accelerator for IIci IIcx IIsi SE/30

Not having a lot of luck. Some screens for anyone that may have tried this.

Check your 5V rail at the logic board, and if possible, verify the accelerator works in an IIci.

Beyond that, you may need a new adapter. The twinspark adapter is not an appropriate adapter for Daystar cards: it is a clone of the DiimoCache 030 adapter and only appropriate for that card. Any other accelerator that works with the twinspark is by coincidence rather than by design, despite the designer's claims. A combination of accelerator/logic board that works for one person may not work for another as a result.

This is why I'm hoping that the FujiNet folks made some headway in 2026, I think that kind of addresses all of the file connectivity needs.

OK, the TwinSpark is working fine. It just needs like two minutes to do checks. Also jammed a Interware Vimage SE/30 24bit Video Card in (waiting for a DB15 to VGA adapter with dip switches). Working on Open Transport now. Will update when I get it all together.

It's a triple threat 🙂. Still looking for a couple things, but all is well in Macintosh land.

I will update with all the specs and more pics of the internals and such.

Super cool, congratulations! There are some games with unexpected 1-bit support that are worth checking out: Syndicate, Avara, and Loom will all run on a stock SE/30 in 1-bit color and they look amazing 😄

If I could find that card, I would go off brand and grab something like https://www.ebay.com/itm/404285416933 for sure.

I got lucky and found an EIZO - I think they fit great both in terms of color and industrial design 😄 only issue is they are mostly 5:4 and mine doesn't play nice with the output from my DOS card 1772388296415.jpeg

I want to triple threat:

Any and all advice is welcome, please. I have ordered:
DayStar Turbo 040 40MHz MC68040RC40 PDS Accelerator
BlueSCSI v2 (50-pin Internal) DaynaPORT SCSI/Link adapter to provide Wi-Fi connectivity over the SCSI bus.
SanDisk Extreme PRO microSDXC UHS-I Memory Card 1 TB + Adapter
TwinSpark PDS riser card
30Video VGA Color Video PDS Card
Note your projected screen looks like it’s not the right size. It shouldn’t fill border to border. Minor quibble but you strike me as a person who wants it set up just right!
