Oh No! More Macs
Posted by: nathall on 2025-07-21 23:23:04
I just picked up a IIe, 128k, SE, among other things... My conquests didn’t get nearly the same royal treatment. The IIe was smuggled back in my checked bag on the airline and the others are coming via UPS... 😕

It‘s finally time for my own Conquests thread…

Just travelled to western Switzerland to fetch this one:

@cheesestraws, I've just thought.. lots of British trains have mains sockets. If they had enough power, you'd literally be able to use a compact Mac on a train - how hilarious!

That’s what the Macintosh Portable is for 🙂

I would actually have done that if it were already recapped! I guess a compact Mac doesn‘t draw much more power than a modern laptop charger…

A Mac Plus has a 60W power supply. Mac SE is up to 100W. Mac Classic 76W.

So, I would guess that a Plus or Classic could be powered on a train.

You are not in any of the pictures. Are you sitting in the checked baggage compartment?

Nice score @robin-fo ! Looks like it is in excellent condition. Did it have any PDS cards (like a video card) in it?
And nice train as well! I guess that, for an American, I am lucky, as the town that I live in (Northampton, Ma) still has a train station in it.

I reckon an SE would be just fine too. The uprated PSU was for hard drive / PDS cards.

I'm usually behind the camera if you can't see me in the photo 😉. I actually haven't seen a luggage van in an SBB train for well over a decade now.

Thanks! I actually didn't even intend to buy it. But nobody has placed a bid beyond CHF 90 so I got it as a surprise...

There were no cards inside and the HD was upgraded in the mid 90s (its head is probably stuck so I can't read any data on it)

First Class too!
Did you get an AEK in its original box?

@cheesestraws: if you'd like photos of Swiss trains & stations, I can take some for you. We have no car and I am out & about on Swiss trains.

No, it's a US M0116 (even with a sticker of some US computer shop!). A Swiss AEK 1 in original box would be really cool though!

Speaking of Mac transportation without car: I had to carry this for maybe 2km when I bought it last year:

Wow. They are heavy and 2Kms is a good 15 minute walk unencumbered. Well done you!

"Macs on Tracks" for mac/train pictures? Anyone here volunteer at a heritage railway? ;-)

I didn’t realise that the SE drew so little. The three pin socket in the back of my estate car can deliver up to 120W - so now I want to power, and use, a compact Mac in my car!

Awesome vibe in these photos with the macs on the train. I wish we had better trains in the US. 😅

We can take this a bit further. Lots of EVs provide V2L these days (Vehicle to Load), which means you can power mains appliances from an EV (e.g. if you're camping). A Mac Plus takes 60W. A typical modern EV has at least 50kWh of battery, so you could power your Mac Plus from a charged EV for: 833 hours, which is approximately 110 days or 30% of a year. We only have a 22kWh Zoe, so we could only provide 48 days worth (and it doesn't have V2L, so that's a bit moot).

A Mac Plus's CRT is probably taking most of the power, so it's a pity you can't mod a Mac Plus and turn off the CRT completely. No spare VIA pins I think. Is that true? But if you could, then you could write a simple screen saver, let's call it CrtSleeper and reduce the average power consumption even further.

Some time ago I also considered replacing the SE‘s PSU with a big 4s LiPo and Pico PSU.. 😅. Would probably all fit into the original PSU cage and turning your mac into a „portable“
