A broken Apple TechStep
Posted by: khannonnd on 2016-09-27 22:26:51
Whenever I see TechSteps for sale, or get a sense of how valuable they are, I kick myself.

about 12 years ago, I came across a person online ( I don't even remember how ) who mentioned they were looking to get rid of some old macs.  He lived in Sacramento.  I said I would love them (without knowing what they were) but I lived too far to go get them (the SF Bay Area).  He said, oh no problem ill bring them to you.  Total cost: Free.

I was like, score!

Three days later he arrives with his truck.  And his friend in his truck.  The cabs *overflowing* with Apple stuff.  Turns out his wife was a tech person with the local school district and they wanted to get rid of the "garbage."   I ended up getting 5 Mac 512ks and about 30 Mac Pluses and random parts/accessories.  But, what I had never seen before was the Apple Tech Step.  In *immaculate condition* complete with its Apple-branded carry case and every available cartridge.

I ended up selling it on Craigslist.  For $250.  I had no idea how rare or valuable it was.

I want it back.  Badly.

So seriously, a Tech Step is a valuable commodity - start the bidding folks, I've got one to sell!  Will provide details if there is interest...

I'm interested.

OlePigeon (and anyone else who may be interested):

What I have is:

- Apple TechStep, with the Apple carrying case

- manuals;

       - Troubleshooting Guide (Classic, SE, SE/30, II, IIx, IIcx, SCSI)

       - CPU Tests Vol. 2 (LC, LC II, Classic II)

       - CPU Tests Vol. 3 (IIci, IIsi, IIvi, IIvx, Performa 600)

       - CPU Tests Vol. 4 (LC III, LC 520, Color Classic, Performa 450, and euro Performa 250 and 520)

       - User Guide

- Cartridges; SCSI, CPU Tests Vol 1, 2, 3, and 4 (5 cartridges total - machines listed with the manuals)

- floppies

- cables, including original ac adapter

Everything looks to be in very good shape.  The TechStep worked great last time I used it - but that was a LONG time ago!  Can provide pictures of anything if you need to see a picture...

So, what's it worth...  I have a bunch of stuff going on between now and Christmas, so probably won't actually do anything about this until the new year - and there is no guarantee I'll actually sell it - but make an offer and I'll certainly consider it!!!  And, if the offer was high enough it could expedite the process!!!   😉

Not to be rude, but I think you should post it in the trading section.

Also, it you want to test it and don't have the original power supply, don't use a generic one, the TechStep is center negative. You should test it with a 9V battery in the bay under the ports block first (read the user guide).

Hey Ferrix, not taking that as rude at all...  I amended my post to include that I do have the original ac adapter as well.  Will have a look through the trading post, that is probably a damn fine idea! 🙂
