| 6100 dead G4 upgrade card. |
Posted by: Phipli on 2024-04-06 08:17:26 First things first - drop back to an older OS. Try System 7.5.3.
9 brings its own questions. Is the driver compatible, do you have enough RAM, is the specific version of 9 one of the stupidly unstable ones on random machines, but fine on others.
😆
Also, it's best to put the case on the machine for the sake of cooling. They run hotter with the lid off because the case ducts the air around the internals. |
Posted by: Phipli on 2024-04-06 08:19:39 Also, you don't have the upgrade in, so it probably isn't the upgrade causing it to crash 😆 |
Posted by: dust bunny on 2024-04-06 08:24:25 I've tried it with it installed, and not installed. Appears to make no difference.
Give me a couple of ticks, and I'll see if I can dig out 7.5.1.
Also, it has 264mb ram installed ATM |
Posted by: dust bunny on 2024-04-06 08:34:14 Doesn’t look good… |

Doesn’t look good… This disk is intact… |
Posted by: dust bunny on 2024-04-06 08:53:21 Well, my 12x CD drive appears to be dead (first time I’ve tried it).
But it boots from the good CD in the original 1x CD drive. |
Posted by: dust bunny on 2024-04-06 08:57:15 Again, the presence or absence of the upgrade appears to make no difference. |

That's my copy of the exact same disk. |

Again, the presence or absence of the upgrade appears to make no difference. It won't without the driver in. |
Posted by: dust bunny on 2024-04-06 09:30:11 I guess I need 9.2.2?
And a blank CD, which I don't have. What's irritating, it that at least a dozen new blank CDs were junked at work last autumn. Still in their cylindircal thing.
I was just trying to rule out the card causing other errors. |

I was just trying to rule out the card causing other errors. You don't need or want anything as new as 9.2.2. Keep it simple for now, you want something like... 7.5.3, 7.6.1 or 8.1 at the very newest. I would recommend 7.5.3 because it is the most likely to work.
Do you have a SCSI SD adapter of any sort? |
Posted by: dust bunny on 2024-04-06 09:42:37 No. |
Posted by: dust bunny on 2024-04-06 09:43:48 I have a USB 3.5 floppy drive. I might still have a disc somewhere. |

I have a USB 3.5 floppy drive. I might still have a disc somewhere. A 7.5.3 install is quite a few disks. Would you like me to post you a CD for 7.5.3 and / or 8.1? |
Posted by: dust bunny on 2024-04-06 09:50:16 I there any particular reason to avoid system 9? It used to run on the 6100 (admitedly a bit slowly without the upgrade card working). |
Posted by: dust bunny on 2024-04-06 09:54:36 I found a drum of new blank DVD-R discs, can the be recorded as a CD?
(I genuinely don't know, but I do know the recording surface is at a diferent depth into disc) |

I there any particular reason to avoid system 9? It used to run on the 6100 (admitedly a bit slowly without the upgrade card working). Mac OS 9 is likely newer than the upgrade and possibly newer than the newest driver. It is a variable that is best to remove. Older OSes will have been guaranteed to have been tested by the manufacturer.
Also, Mac OS 9 is a bloated memory hog that has no place on a Nubus PPC 🤣

(I genuinely don't know, but I do know the recording surface is at a diferent depth into disc) That sadly isn't possible. |

That sadly isn't possible. I had a sneaky suspicion (would have been convinient though). |

It worked with 72mb of ram, should (technically) 'work' with 264mb. Yes, but its very difficult to troubleshoot blind over the internet, so starting with a setup that is more likely to work reduces the number of variables to account for. "OS is too new" is a variable that is nice and easy to throw out. |
Posted by: dust bunny on 2024-04-06 10:56:00 I suppose I could break out the Acard aec7732, the adaptor, bung in an SSD and install 7.1.2 tonight.
Only it’s bigger than 120BG.
Could I partition it from the install CD?
What a pity I don't have a much smaller SSD (I suspect that's probably the first time that's ever been said). |
