Recently-recapped SE/30 went "bang" - a tantalum-capacitor cautionary atle

Perhaps consider solid organic polymer?

+1 for polymer caps, they don't suffer from this problem, and they retain the look of the original electrolytic caps.

+2

I’m all in on solid polymer, they’re cheaper than tantalums anyway, and fit the pads.

Any brand you'd recommend ?

Interesting, i had this capacitor catch fire, the exact same one

Same here.
I'm definitely not too fond of tantalums anymore, at least not at the same voltage rating as the original electrolytics.

Agreed. I've been using tantalums even though I don't like them and, to be honest, they've been fine for me - but if I were starting again or making recommendations to anyone else, solid polymer would probably be the top of my list.

Any brand you'd recommend ?

I think the ones I've used are Wurth ones but the same holds true as for any other capacitor, really - the reputable brands are basically all fine for our purposes, and no name ones are best avoided.

I use Wurth PSLP series.

I've used Wurth as well. As a bonus, the printing on the caps is red which looks cool.

It does, and it helps to quickly distinguish a board that’s been recapped!

Interesting. Does the 12v supply ever spike or reverse, like on power-up maybe? Or does that cap see a lot of RMS current?

I've never seen a 16v tantalum short out at 12v, and Quicksilver and MDD Power Macs are full of them. I've seen dual 1GHz Quicksilver CPU boards that were badly warped and discolored after years and years of running hot, but never a blown tantalum...

In the context of this thread I want you to know that I misread this as "quickly extinguish a board..."
