| Got a Macintosh! Now What? |

You could go down that rabbit hole, as many of us have done, but if you can source enough original floppy disks, you don't have to. My stock Mac Plus was my only computer for nine years. WriteNow, MacWrite, MacPaint, Microsoft Multiplan, Microsoft QuickBasic, Epyx Rogue, Wizardry, and Dark Castle all got plenty of use during that period of time. Thanks. I just had an idea: External SCSI to SD. That answers my question for the floppy ideas. But you can't beat original floppies. |

Also, do any of y'all have a good way to burn Macintosh-Compatible floppies (400K). I'm afraid that this is why I suggested getting a FloppyEmu, there isn't a "good" way of writing 400k or 800k disks from a modern computer. |

But you can't beat original floppies. Yes you can! Absolutely any other media! 😆 |
Posted by: MacintoshSE1987 on 2023-12-11 07:43:58 @Phipli, but wouldn't an SD-SCSI make it easier to get any software to a Mac SE, or does the Floppy Emu have a SD slot? |

The picture is slightly dishonest - I have a card that will drive the big screen, but have never got the card to work as it should. But otherwise, this is my 1987 Macintosh SE that I have had since the late 90s, and has been in the family since the mid 90s. It's name is Merlin, I don't know why, but it's hard disk has been called that since before we owned it and I've never had the heart to change it.
It currently has a 50MHz 030 upgrade and 16MB of RAM. |

@Phipli, but wouldn't an SD-SCSI make it easier to get any software to a Mac SE, or does the Floppy Emu have a SD slot? It has an SD card Slot and an onboard menu system for selecting disks. It can use disk images up to 2GB.
What you choose is up to you though. |
Posted by: cheesestraws on 2023-12-11 07:47:55 The Floppy Emu is a really good piece of engineering IMO. |

True. I can be a traditionalist at times. 😅 I stopped using floppy disks as soon as anything else was available. They were a nightmare. Newer beige Macs often wouldn't read disks from older machines, disks would go bad, you can never fit enough on an 800k disk...

So in order to make an SE productive, you have to get another Mac. I see what you are doing. 😉
And in order to make the bridge machine more useful, you need to have other Macs to connect to it. You alright, I learned it by watching you! For those non-US folks, or the younger set, this was a classic 1980's anti-drug PSA that was played over and over (and over) again on TV. I think we can safely substitute Vintage Macs for the drugs.
And might as well get it over with...since @MacintoshSE1987 is new, should be warned to watch out for @joshc and @Phipli .
Perfect example, Josh mocks me immediately after I plug his awesome machut site. No love 😆 |
