e my Macintosh II to 20MB (4x4MB Bank A) (4x1MB Bank B

Very respectable. Nice.

I just think they do not make good contact in the SIMM sockets.

I recently posted about adding a little bit of solder to the SIMM RAM contacts to help them make better contact. A number of people have had success with doing so. But, if you are happy with 20 MB, then I agree that you should not risk breaking a socket tab.

Can you have another set of SIMMDoublers in Bank B for a total of 32MB? I do have the IIx ROM upgrade, so I believe that will work. If so and another set of SIMMDoublers comes along, I may try that.
