Posted by: cheesestraws on 2023-08-10 03:53:16 I think this is probably basically the same thing as a Pickles 24(A?). See this image here:

from the image gallery Mr. Shinbayashi sent us. You have the same five rectangular BUG-branded chips with a part number beginning 1412F; you have the same big BUG chip with part number HG63F... and you have the same RAMDAC. On this card you do not have the unpopulated slots on the 24AW, and the characteristic four DIP switches have been moved so they can be accessed from outside the case (they set various parameters for the monitor).
Can you dump the ROM please? |

Ah ok!
View attachment 60389 It is a 3MB video card. Each chip is 128kByte. |

Can you dump the ROM please? I can see the similarities, I wonder why they rescrambled the entire board layout though? Also not sure about the Delfi branding, I get a big splash screen with the Delfi logo when it powers up.
What's the easiest way to dump the ROM? Do I need to pull it off the board and put it in a programmer or is there some sort of other method? |
Posted by: cheesestraws on 2023-08-10 04:16:54 Given that the ROM is socketed I'd probably just pull it out and read it in a programmer personally. I can't remember the incantation to read it on a Mac that it's plugged into but one does exist IIRC. |

Is that good? I’m used to the newer cards not the older stuff so I have no idea where that puts this card in the lineup. It is the standard "as much as you could ever need" amount for old cards. It is just enough to do 24bit colour at 1152*870 - that is the two page display / 21" resolution. 24bit at that resolution in a NuBus machine is crazy high end. |

If it's basically a Pickles 24, it's a very competent and decent card. |
Posted by: t-shinb on 2024-02-01 17:54:58 I'm Shinbayashi, the developer of Pickles cards. I'm sorry I didn't notice this post. Defi24 is an OEM product of Pickles24A+, and the internal structure is almost the same. The switch on the panel is for selecting the monitor resolution, but no documentation is available. The maximum resolution is 1024*768/75Hz. Maybe acceleration will work with CDEV-S/W for PicklesCard.
These are the drivers and ROMs for the BUG Pickles 24A - AW and Pickles XA, a range of high-resolution NuBus graphics cards from B.U.G in Japan, along with their source code. These were lost for a long time but recently resurfaced thanks to Mr.

I have attached a photo and catalog of Pickles24A+.
I wish you good luck. |

I'm Shinbayashi, the developer of Pickles cards Many thanks to you for taking the time to find and share the software for those cards! Having a source code example for a video device, and in particular one using a mix of assembly and C, was very helpful to the community. In my case, when I was creating my own device and drivers. |
Posted by: obsolete on 2024-02-02 10:56:00 @t-shinb Thank you very much Shinbayashi-san for joining and sharing this information about Pickles! If you wouldn't mind, could you please tell us the story of why it is named Pickles? I like the name and wonder where it came from. |
Posted by: t-shinb on 2024-02-04 17:35:30 I am also very happy to be able to contact old users of Pickles products. I don't remember the exact origin of Pickles, but I think Pickles is a well-known preserved food. I think the name came from that our planning manager who loves picnics and wants to eat pickles on a picnic. The very first catalog included both PICNIC and Pickles. |
Posted by: olePigeon on 2024-02-05 11:19:59 @t-shinb Over here in the United States, "pickles" usually refers to dill pickled cucumbers. It's very popular to have on a sandwich or as a side dish to eat on its own. They can be all sorts of flavors from dill, sour, salty, spicy, or sweet. Dill and sweet are the two most popular pickles in the United States. If it isn't a cucumber, then we'll usually call something "pickled," such as "pickled onions."
There are a few exceptions such as sauerkraut. For some reason we still call it sauerkraut, and not "pickled cabbage." I think maybe because even though it's German, it still sounds the way it tastes. So no translation needed. It's sour. And it's cabbage. Sauerkraut. 🙂 |
