Cloning a 33MHz 68030 Upgrade for Mac II
Posted by: Trash80toHP_Mini on 2026-05-10 16:14:56 Apparently Motorola made the MC68020RC33 that, if found, might be used in a Performer Type 2x CPU accelerator? Overcoming the 68030 hurdle seems a bit of a less hassle than finding one of those . . . or in quantity. 🙄

Ebay is $40-50, surprised I found any of them available at all from anywhere.! Wondering if the timing GAL setup in the the Performer we've cloned might be convinced to clock double 68020 to 68020 as it does for 68000 to 68030 on the performer? Same CPU to Same CPU multiplier has to be a lot easier than cross CPU chip clocking with inherent bus translations, no? At any rate, A clock doubling 68020 accelerator might have a better chance of meshing with the Orchid Cache Card, SRAM speed meshing/response time limitations depending. Dunno, just bouncing the ball of the wall again here. edit: as I thought, the 68030 was released in 1987 with the initial Macintoch II (pre-NuChip) was released in March/rhipped April of that year.So not a lot of time for accelerator development on that front. My MacSprint II has a copyright date of 1989, no clue about month, so I've no real ides what's going on in terms of timeline. Does anyone know when the first 68030 accelerators with Cache started showing up?
