With today's security concerns it may be impossible to tunnel thru a network port considering that may be a seen as a security breach. Specific authorization is needed for the chip to allow it.
This isn't totally true. libpcap works on Macs. The tun driver is decrepit for kernel integrity reasons rather than because allowing a system to pretend to be an ethernet bridgs is insecure. |

Don‘t forget there is also Apple’s own VMNet on newer Macs which runs well with AppleTalk. |
