Powerbook 1400 Won't Detect Hardrive
Posted by: macuserman on 2021-11-15 05:29:59
Little update on this, I did buy another machine which is not a parts machine but in dedication I tore it completely apart to borrow the hardrive ribbon and check to see if indeed that was the issue with this machine. I was able to boot without any issues off an internal drive using the borrowed ribbon, so I guess that's a bit of good news now if only I could find a ribbon somewhere, which is highly unlikely this one would be functional.

Wow! That's crazy I've never seen just the cable by itself before and then bam there's one, brand new no less. BTW that same seller has quite a sellection of new old stock drive cables if anyone else is looking. The 1400 one is already sold sadly, but not that sadly because it's coming to my house 😆 😆 your just out of luck if you also wanted one. 😛

Yes! I'm quite pleased, this is just a test machine/ to mess around with because it's in such rough shape, but it sure will be nice to have it be able to boot without having to rustle up other gadgets.

What is the maximum size SD card that will work in your 1400? I am seeing 32Gb for sale.

I've used a 64GB successfully.
Keep the boot partition to under 8GB, then use the rest for data. You can boot off a larger partition, but if the actual system files leave the first 8GB you can run into trouble, from what I've heard.
So, partition 8GB or less and put your system folder there, then put the rest into a big partition that won't be booted from.
