| Decided to try my hand at recapping. Guidence needed! |
Posted by: Guybrush3pwood on 2016-03-14 10:51:39 Is that item really all that better than an iron and solder sucker?
|
Posted by: 68krazy on 2016-03-14 10:55:54 For SMD components, I think so. You just blast the area around the cap (careful not to hold the heat in any one spot too long) and then pick it up with tweezers.
It's also very good for heatshrink, removing glue on PCBs, heating up general areas of a PCB to make soldering/removing components easier, etc.

Posted by: Guybrush3pwood on 2016-03-14 10:58:32 Ok, I'm assuming I can still use my solder sucker to clean up the old solder after heated with the air gun?

Posted by: 68krazy on 2016-03-14 11:02:25 Not quite sure good sir. After the hot air desolder, I just used solder wick like in the video. I didn't need a solder sucker.
If you're interested, here is my build thread with lots of pictures. Motherboard work begins towards the end of the first page:

Posted by: 68krazy on 2016-03-14 19:16:22 I think I set mine to 350 when I desoldered the caps. And low airflow, so nothing flies off the board.

Posted by: Guybrush3pwood on 2016-04-18 21:41:44 Just wanted to update this. I've now got three successful recaps under my belt and they all went well. I highly recommend giving it a shot if you're thinking about doing it. It's a slight pain in the ass, but well worth it and hardly impossible to do.

Posted by: olePigeon on 2016-04-19 09:55:22 You don't need a fancy soldering iron to do it, either. It's the easiest way to help futureproof your Mac.

Posted by: Guybrush3pwood on 2016-04-19 11:55:48 How do you do it without a soldering iron? I definitely used one! Lol

Posted by: olePigeon on 2016-04-19 16:09:50 You don't need a fancy soldering iron. A cheap pencil iron will work just fine. 🙂
Also, technically, you could use an oven & solder paste.
