Using SCSI2SD v5.5 in a Powerbook

@360alaska yet another thing of beauty, love your work.

Thanks

Thanks for the update (I was just about to pull the trigger on an ARTMix) and sorry for piling on. Happy to keep waiting knowing something is in the works.
Please don't purchase SCSI2SD clones from Artmix; They are non GPL compliant, unlicensed clones of SCSI2SD, and Artmix is and has been distributing modified firmware without providing their changes. They've been approached multiple times, and all they are willing to provide is the compiled, binary blob for the board, which in no way makes them compliant with the GPL. In response, they claim _we_ are violating the GPL, which is 100% wrong. Buyer beware. Don't believe me? Ask Michael McMaster, the creator.

Regardless of your opinions of Artmix, below is the prototype interposer we developed to allow for the V5.5 PCB to be used as a 2.5" SCSI drive. With the male DB25 port installed as seen below, you can use the SCSI2SD both externally and internally, which has the potential to make provisioning significantly more straightforward.

We sent one of these PCBs to @360alaska, and he performed his own transplant of a stock V5.5 (external) to this PCB. If he is inclined to share his photos, we'd be more than fine with that.

Very nice! Good to know about Artmix's shenanigans. Long time OSS / GPL proponent, so they'll get none of my business. Only thing I like about their unit, however, is the included metal frame with horizontal threaded holes so no 3D printed or other custom mount is necessary.

Also, I'm probably missing something obvious, but wouldn't a DB25F make it easier to connect externally? Every DB25 SCSI cable I've ever seen ends in a DB25M unless you're imagining these be installed directly against the Mac sans-cable?

In my experience, this is exactly what I did: plug the v.5.5 directly in the Mac and Apple IIGS scsi plug.
Only with Quadra 700, due to the case angles on the back, I couldn't manage to do it without taking the case away, or using a scsi zip drive cable.

Normally, yes, but V5.5 is a "direct attach" style device, designed such that no cable is needed.

Looks great @inertialcomputing. Do you know roughly when these might be available for purchase? I'm working on refurbishing a 550c.

Sure, but per the attached picture, the connector is already different than the one included on the v5.5 (not 90deg). I'm just suggesting that if a different part is being used, a DB25F is more suitable for a device targeted at PowerBooks or other mobiles since most either a) have an HDI-30, b) ports concealed behind doors or overhangs, or c) don't have external SCSI at all, making direct attachment impractical / impossible and prioritizing compatibility with a cable makes more sense.

@360alaska I'm also looking for SCSI2SD solutions for PowerBooks.  You going to make some of your adapters available for purchase?

Posted by: 360alaska on 2020-11-19 15:21:24
I don't like to shill, but they are on Ebay.

Posted by: pcamen on 2020-11-19 15:24:30
Wonderful!  I just bought two.

Is it against forum rules to post a link to your own stuff for sale on eBay?  Can I post it for you?  🙂

I don't know that there is a rule against it. It's just my policy.

Yeeeeah! I was waiting for this! Got one!

Excellent! I’m happy there are more options on the market. This is my current version of my adapter:

It will stay on the market as long as there is a market. I ended up beveling the edges to make it fit various PowerBooks a little better.

Is anyone aware of a sled, or files to print a sled, for this new form factor?
