Why 7.5.4 on 68k, when 7.5.5 is less buggy and more or less identical?

Posted by: ScottB on 2016-01-11 20:57:00
OK! BIG UPDATE

It was because I was trying to install a fresh 9.1 instead of 9.0.

It installed fine (no fatal errors), but the problem is that the Mac doesn't want to boot to the hard disk.

I'll try System 7.5.5 now, I'll also see if the 7.5 or 8.x disk is even bootable.

As far as I know 8.x isn't bootable.

I'll see what I can do.

While the Mac starts up, I can tell you that

1. I cannot boot from the 7.5 disk

2. I cannot boot from the 9.x disk and then take it out and put in the 7.5 disk to start installing

(won't even give me a 'feed me' loop, as in 'Please put in the disk x', then 'Please put in the disk y' looping)

3. I cannot boot from the 8.0-

7.5.5 isĀ NOT less buggy on 68k. That's on PPC. It is rare, unless you're on 68kMLA.

Then why bother trying to find an obscure buggy release when 7.5.5 will be just fine?

If it wont boot from an 8.0 disk its because its an "upgrade" not retail install. Ā

7.5 wont work as far as I know as 7.5.3 or newer is needed. Ā I have an original install disk I could probably send if needed just PM me an address and send it back.

Though the last pic is very out of focus, it is a PowerPC board, either a 6200 or 6300 series.the holes around the CPU is where the PowerPC heat sink clips on to. A 68K like the 620 or 630 board would not have those holes.

So this is an upgraded machine. Congrats.

I have a 6213CD, but with HD Problems and I'm going to put in a CF-SSD for it since it is IDE. I just need to find my CDs for it. When I find them I'll let you know and maybe make a copy of them for your machine. I never trust downloading mac files on a PC and burn them to a disk, because something gets lost in translation. But keep working on it. Maybe you can figure it out before I can do what I go to do on this end.

You're so going to get it, ScottB!

(Hint: I found the CDs and PM'd you the information...)

Posted by: Elfen on 2016-01-14 08:52:11
So what OS you have running on it?

And as stated on the PM, though it should have a 603/75 CPU that would run warm and not hot, you should get a heatsink for it. Most PPC heatsinks from a 6100 to 6500 should work with it.

Inquiring minds want to know.

Sorry for the SEVEN OR EIGHT MONTHS of not looking at 68kmla.

I don't really use that Quadra anymore.

It has OS 9.2 on it at the moment.

I have a iMac G3 now, which is way better.

Because it can run OS 9 and OS X 10.4.

yay

You're f**ked. Ā It's now a 6200. Ā Better chuck the whole thing out.
