Posted by: Paralel on 2019-01-29 14:50:32 Yeah, they are uncommon in home networking these days since everything has built in diagnostics for troubleshooting. However, in your case, those aren't available, so that is your only choice for testing functionality on the local system

Posted by: SE30_Neal on 2019-01-29 15:05:51 I had installed it but thinking a fresh install, after checking the nic is seated correctly in the pds slot, open transport is present and correct: a methodical ground up inspection and correction as to speak as I effectively have all the hardware and software.

It's something you can attach after the transceiver that will allow you to test the hardware in your machine to see if its functional. It will help give you a better idea of where the problem might be.
It's a little Ethernet plug:

It looks like an ethernet plug that has its cable chopped off, but its supposed to be just a blind end. The loopback plug will allow you to test your system hardware Hi Paralel
would this work as its aui direct?

I have a 10base switch I brought only a few weeks ago as my old one wasn’t auto switching, I’ve had the transceiver for some time the one below. I’m just not sure if I’m doing anything wrong? Hey, I used to have that exact transceiver; it was port 25 on an otherwise 24 port Kingston rackable hub...
I'm sure you've probably already been through this but scanning through the thread I don't see it explicitly mentioned: In the photos from the ebay auction for the ethernet card is looks like there's a slide switch in between the thinnet and AUI ports on the backplane widget that in said photos looks like it's positioned towards the thinnet connector. You don't need to slide that over to make it work with a transceiver on the AUI port, do you?

Posted by: SE30_Neal on 2019-01-31 11:38:12 Thanks everyone. I ordered a network loopback just before (gorbonos) got it working but I guess that’ll be useful at some point in the future anyway. Another bonus is a timely delivery of an external 2gb scsi hdd from eBay which should make for plenty of space for a SE/30 software.
