Maybe interesting - a year ago I bought 2x3 cells here (I know this distributor since the time I've been living in Poland) and reconditioned 2 Portable batteries:
These are basically identical cells like the original ones. Unfortunately out of stock at the moment.

Thanks Moldy yes I’ve used them before, as you say can’t get hold of them now. I recon the 0809 probably has had them inside

I believe that those are exactly what is in that black Cyclon package. I use the cyclon al by itself.

I'd have to take it apart to show it any better. I just carefully gutted the original battery. The Cylcon battery is essentially the same size as the Portable battery.
On the outside of the Cyclon battery there are some reenforcing ribs (See photos of Cyclon battery pack) that I trimmed off with an Exacto knife until it would fit inside the Portable battery case. The contacts on the Cyclon battery lined up pretty well with the original contacts so I was able to reuse them.
The rebuilt battery worked fine when I last had the Portable fired up 20 years ago. I'm sure the battery and probably the Portable are dead now.
As others mentioned you can also buy the individual Cyclon cells and just rebuild the original battery.

Thanks, I have at it with the scalpel and Dremel!

Yeah, once you have the original battery apart and the Cyclon battery you'll see how it all fits together with a bit of trimming.
