Mac IIx
Posted by: rickrob on 2018-05-01 16:52:04
I started up the IIx board today.  Re-capped it and found a broken trace on the rear power switch, so it wouldn't power on with the switch, but did with the keyboard. I tried the ROM SIMM from my SE/30 which is really a IIsi ROM (32bit clean) and got death chimes. Swapped the RAM out, and it started up.

I'll have to recap the power supply too, now that I know it runs.

My Mac IIx is alive. It's running System 6.0.8 on a Quantum 230MB hard drive with a Radius Precision Color 24x and an Orange Micro Mac 286 with DOS 3.3.

Recapped the logic board and power supply and added a battery board.

Looks great!  How much use is the Mac286 board - is DOS text speed fast?

I haven't done much testing yet, but it seems to be about the same speed as a PC/AT.

I like the idea of using the Mac II case as a tray table of its own.

If only it had Snow White-inspired legs and a bigger surface for the mouse. If you could make do with a keyboard of less width, a TrackMan Marble might do the trick.

Though it'd also be a little strange to have the Mac IIx without the keyboard it was made for. Hmm.
