| Is audio playback on a Classic even possible? |
Posted by: OlaHughson on 2013-11-17 09:07:02 I got a keyboard now; I just lack a mouse π

Posted by: uniserver on 2013-11-18 02:53:23 ok so/so news.
The only 680nothing machines i can get to play AIFF's is the Macintosh Portable and Macintosh PowerBook 100
I am thinking its because of the hardware allows it.
I am going to do some more testing to see how far i can push it before it skips.
right now all i have is 10 and 22Khz mono, I am going to try stereo next π

Posted by: MinerAl on 2013-11-18 02:55:30 how about a System 7 sound file/snd resource?
|
Posted by: uniserver on 2013-11-18 03:08:55 sorry, what is your question?
- plus
- se
- classic
i still get the normal sounds, and enhanced sounds with SoundMaster with these compacts.
just as far as sfplay(plays aiff's), the only 680nohting macs that will output sound with that app is Portable and PB100.

Posted by: uniserver on 2013-11-18 03:32:59 ok the powerbook 100,
only plays 1 second of a
44khz
8bit
mono
AIFF file. and locks up solid.
next i will try
22khz
8bit
stereo
its about the same size, 28mb

I agree with you : an Apple Sound Chip may be required. I try a workaround by putting a Sound Manager 3.0 extension in the System folder (available in System Update 3.0 for 7.1] - just to test if the sound API of the Sound Manager could emulate in software what could not be done in hardware) but with no sucess in 6.0.7 ; perhaps could it work with 7.1.

22khz8bit
stereo ok this works with the powerbook 100
π sounds pretty good too. But it pretty much makes the PB about useless,
its so slow, you can't multitask or use it much at all. AIFF File takes complete priority.
Even the mouse movement is lagged.
also i was wrong about the file size,
this complete 3.5 min song was 28megs @ 44khz 8bit mono, the same song was only 14 meg's @ 22khz 8bit stereo.

Posted by: uniserver on 2013-11-18 18:51:25 here is a video of the powerbook 100 playing a song.
Mac Bandet and its sound effects / multitasking stopped the music from playingβ¦ but its fine π
Quick reboot and it was playing AIFF's nicely again. NOT BAD FOR ONLY 500K memory usage π

Posted by: uniserver on 2013-11-18 23:36:46 last video i promise, the Macintosh Portable playing an AIFF, with only 1mb of ram (i realized later)

Posted by: MinerAl on 2013-11-19 13:14:25 I was asking about System 7 sounds because I would swear I was able to play them on my Plus.
I just used SoundApp (in 9.2.2 Classic OS mode in 10.2.8 on a G4 wind tunnel) to turn a WAV version of "Dance the Night Away" by Van Halen into a System 7 Sound. It's 15 MB (about half the size of the WAV), but it plays the whole song in Classic.
Dug out a Mac Classic (Sys 7.5), and it wouldn't even try to play the 15MB file (being in the neighborhood of 8x the RAM available). So I went back and made a 30-second mono clip that weighed in at 1.4MB. I double clicked it, it began whirring away with the watch and... nothing. It plays the simple Quack, Indigo, Sosumi sounds, but not a complex 30-second System 7 sound.
Betcha it'd work on a PB100 though πb:

Posted by: Scott Baret on 2013-11-19 13:25:15 I was actually playing around with my Plus two nights ago. The Disney Screen Saver (After Dark) has a lot of music (I think it's MIDI but I could be mistaken) and it plays fine on the Plus. It just takes a while to load. System 7 sounds work on a Plus, too. That is, of course, if you run System 7 π

Posted by: uniserver on 2013-11-19 13:40:17 I bet the Macintosh II will play AIFF's
but then again that is a 68020, so that's not too exciting for me π
university of michigan has a great old mac freeware archive
http://www.umich.edu/~archive/mac/
http://www.umich.edu/~archive/mac/sound/sounds/99bottles.cpt.hqx
this plays on the SE/plus/classic
the computer will sing 99 bottles of beer on the wall and count down.
http://www.umich.edu/~archive/mac/sound/sounds/rapmaster1.01.sit.hqx
this one is rap master, it gives you a record you can scratch and make funky beats π

Posted by: uniserver on 2013-11-20 01:49:13 hey so the Plus / SE / Classic
they only have a 4 voice sound processor?
Trying to find a Software Midi Player for the 68000 mac.
i am getting a lot of mixed info.
basically Quicktime 2.0 could play midi's for me. but that requires an 020 cpu.
I do not have any MIDI hardware. just the Sound I/C's soldered to the main board.
There has to be a app i can download that would allow me to play a midi file, even if it
cuts out @ only 4 voices.
Maybe have it play some Cannon_D or maybe _C ? or does such software not really exist for the 68000 cpu⦠/ sound hardware...

Posted by: OlaHughson on 2013-11-20 13:33:12 I got a mouse now, but... How is that possible that i doesn't see the System Folder on the hard drive? :x
|
Posted by: OlaHughson on 2013-11-20 14:45:45 Also: I cannot boot from any system 7 image - address error. And when trying to install, it invokes unimplemented trap. Now my mac is without a working system ;x

Posted by: mcdermd on 2013-11-20 15:27:21 Will it boot from ROM (Command+Option+X+O)?
|
Posted by: uniserver on 2013-11-20 15:33:12 sounds like the main board needs some caps.
