| Markings On The Back of 500 Series Powerbook LCD Panels |
Posted by: mcdermd on 2013-08-29 09:19:35 The cables are marked in large letters with "SHARP" or "TOSHIBA".
|
Posted by: Paralel on 2013-08-29 09:34:40 Other than the names, are they actually different? Or is it the same cable with two different names on it?
|
Posted by: mcdermd on 2013-08-29 09:43:41 I'm sure the pinouts are different
|
Posted by: Paralel on 2013-08-29 10:41:19 Well, I guess it's a good thing I didn't try recycling the cable from my 540 then.

Other than the names, are they actually different? Or is it the same cable with two different names on it? FYI - They are the same. I have a Sharp Cable going to my Toshiba display on my PowerBook 540c PPC. Oh and my screen is glossy and a Toshiba. |
Posted by: 3lectr1cPPC on 2022-10-31 08:43:43 Rats, I thought the 540cs were all solid state on the LCD. I’ve gotta check mine now. |

Well that’s exciting - so that means I can replace a broken Toshiba LTM09C017 with a Sharp LQ94D041 (which seems to be more readily available) and use the same cable to the LCD? The connectors do look the same in photos.
I don’t know whether to trust any of the sellers of the Toshiba panels on eBay and AliExpress - they seem to all use the same photos - I asked one to send a photo of the side with the connector, and they responded by doubling the price to US$384! I think that means ‘go away’ 🙂 The Sharp panel is available from someone whose listing seems more credible. |
Posted by: 3lectr1cPPC on 2023-10-10 04:03:04 Be warned that the sharp panel for these has a bunch of caps on it and the Toshiba doesn’t. You’re in for a recapping job, should you buy a sharp replacement.
I don’t think anyone has been scammed buying one of these LCDs - one guy got sent the wrong panel once, but that seemed like an honest mistake. I haven’t ever done so myself though. |

It’s claimed that the Sharp panel is unused. I’ve recapped older mono panels and have a good stock of SMD electros so I’ll take the chance, I think. As long as the cable fits… |
Posted by: alexGS on 2023-10-14 07:30:30 Unbelievably, the other eBay seller of the used Toshiba panel just doubled the price (to US$364). I guess the two or three listings are all the same seller.
I’ve made an offer of US$100 on the Sharp panel (asking price US$138) which I think is fair, as @AEChadwick paid US$80 for it as far as I can tell 🙂
The chance I’m taking is that the Toshiba active-matrix (TFT) LCD cable works with the Sharp active-matrix LCD. From what Cubbie036 said above, I’m guessing these will interchange.
AEChadwick found the Sharp passive-matrix (FSTN) cable does not work with the Sharp TFT LCD. I also tested this in reverse - tried the Toshiba TFT cable with the Sharp passive-matrix FSTN display, and that didn’t work, which proved to me there is a difference.
Has anyone tried the Toshiba TFT cable with the Sharp TFT display? |

hey, i'm happy to be part of the team. the $80 LQ94D041 was from china (some kind of New Old Stock); i got the eBay LQ94D041 for like $25 (that one came with a cable taped to it, obviously a pull from a nice person that didn't fall for eBay’s "automatic" pricing scam). |

Thanks 🙂 Yes, same LW94D041 on eBay as on AliExpress I think, price a bit higher but I think my US$100 offer is fair.
Do you have any opinion about my cable question? Cubbie036 seemed to have the opposite scenario to me. I’d like to know if the Toshiba TFT cable can be used with the Sharp TFT. |
Posted by: alexGS on 2023-11-07 10:27:59 Having opened up a 540c with a working, original Sharp LQ94D041 display, I can now confirm that the Toshiba TFT cable works with the Sharp TFT display.
The cables labelled ‘Sharp Color TFT’ and ‘Toshiba Color TFT’ can be used interchangeably.
Cables for the ‘Color FSTN’ or ‘Gray FSTN’ display types cannot be interchanged with the TFT panels; ie. you cannot put a 540c panel into a 520 or 520c unless you have the TFT cable to match (but either Toshiba or Sharp TFT cable will work). |
