G3 iMac acting crazy after upgrade
Posted by: notcrazy_iminsane on 2011-08-12 15:14:38
After a little research I realized that. I also heard about a firmware hack that's supposed to allow fir an extended desktop on G3 iMacs. I did some searching, but I only found mention of it. No downloads or how-to. It's almost like it's some sort of iMac legend

Are you sure it was definitely G3 iMacs? There was one for G4 iMacs (and G3 iBooks), but I can't remember there being anything for G3 iMacs.

Extended is _not_ an option for G3 iMacs. G4 iMacs and G3 iBooks yes, but not G3 iMacs.

I've only found mentions of the firmware hack for G3 iMacs. So far I've found the hack for eMacs, G4, and G5 iMacs only.

Also on a side note, would a down converter from a 400MHz board with a 500MHz or 600MHz board? I don't think it would since the components appear only slightly different, but those differences that appear minor could turn out to be major to the system. :-/

You should be careful about switching the boards... At least from my experience, the 400mhz iMac g3 and the 600mhz g3 used different heatsinc configurations...so if you put a 600mhz in a 400mhz metal logic board tray, it doesn't make contact with the heatsinc and will overheat.

I'll have to be careful and check to see how the processor lines up then. I would have overlooked that if I wasn't being careful. :O

Well, right now my sister is content with the 400MHz running Tiger. I guess for now I'll focus on my goal of saving for a new Intel iMac... And maybe a Lisa or a Newton
