What to do With an ANS 500
Posted by: ChristTrekker on 2011-03-12 09:52:11
Tried booting my ANS for the heck of it, and it didn't come up. 🙁 Lugged out the spare monitor and keyboard, and apparently isn't finding the boot drive. It's a half-height 9GB I had lying around when I got the ANS. So now I'm reinstalling to one of the 1/3 height 2GB drives that I got with it.

Sad how much more expensive retro-computing is going to get when the old SCSI drives finally die. When an adapter is as expensive as the drive, it tells me something's wrong.

Server SCSI drivers were built to last a long time and can still be found cheap, what worries me are the cheap small laptop IDE drives for my laptop collection.

Frankly, I think the reason for my ANS' extreme longevity is that, other than power outages and moving, it's never been powered down and the disk is always spinning.

This probably also explains my IIci's long life as well; it sits there with NetBSD, a 1GB SCSI drive and 128MB of RAM, and hums along serving DNS and AppleTalk. Other than chewing through a cache card every few years, it maintains ridiculous uptime:

% uptime
7:43PM up 431 days, 6:28, 1 user, load averages: 0.21, 0.12, 0.09

I am experiencing quite a bit of vicarious thrill from this topic, since I may well never find a shiner myself. You guys rock!

Mine right now is doing its duty as my bedside table in my bedroom until I can locate more mezzazine boards for it and more ram. Eventually id like to have her running as my full time YDL Web Server

If anyone in the US wants to get rid of ANS, let me know 🙂
