Posted by: CompuNurd on 2015-07-13 11:52:26 Just found this little guy at the Goodwill computer parts store. $10! I just put 10.4 on it, I thought about getting speakers for it and setting it up in the garage, but there's probably no room for it.

Nice! I hope to get one some day. Beautiful. You may be in luck! I can't really find a good spot for it in the garage, and I already have one if I ever do need it. There are some blemishes to the front of the screen. I will upload more pictures if you are interested.

Posted by: TheWhiteFalcon on 2015-07-14 15:00:30 What model is it? I get nervous about shipping them though, because of the arm.

The Mac OS 9-bootable model?
c How do I tell?
|
Posted by: TheWhiteFalcon on 2015-07-15 13:35:15 It's bootable, yes.

Posted by: CompuNurd on 2015-08-12 22:26:34 As I get some things out of the way and get back around to restoring the Portable, will it take a standard 50 pin Quantum drive? I know the ribbon cable is 32 pin or something like that at one end, but does it have 50 pin at the other end? I haven't had time to look at it again, so I am not sure what to expect.
|
Posted by: CC_333 on 2015-08-13 04:36:35 Yes, it'll take one with an adapter.

Posted by: CompuNurd on 2015-09-08 17:38:13 I am getting closer to having a Portable with a hard drive! That was hand soldered by me!
This is Uniserver's 34 to 50 pin adapter, you can buy it on his site or PM him. He sells it assembled or not assembled.

Posted by: 360alaska on 2015-09-08 19:34:56 What's up with that soldering on the ground leads?
|
Posted by: CompuNurd on 2015-09-08 20:02:41 Yeah, it needs to be cleaned up a bit. After I tinned the wires they wouldn't fit in the hole. When the wires weren't tinned they just spread apart when I tried to get them in the hole. In order to fix it I need three hands, one to melt the solder, the other to hold the board, and the other to push the wire through.

Posted by: CompuNurd on 2015-09-09 15:41:58 I just pulled this from a computer and am wiping it. I have never seen anything like this and will be keeping it. It's a WD 160 GB drive.
I have never seen a viewable consumer drive.

Posted by: TheWhiteFalcon on 2015-09-09 17:12:38 That's a Velociraptor 10,000 RPM drive!
|
Posted by: CompuNurd on 2015-09-09 17:54:59 What is that?
|
Posted by: techknight on 2015-09-09 18:19:57 for a few years WD made the Raptor series. Not sure what the market intention was, and I do remember them being on the market.
But, I dont know if they still make them, I doubt it.
Personally, I thought they were made for the gaming crowd. Why? Well at the time, clear case PCs, with tons of lights and neon CCFLs, etc were all the rage, whereas its not much anymore. Ill admit it, at one time I thought a PC with plexiglass covers and tons of lights were cool, and nowadays, I dont really care.
These drives were made during that time period.
|
Posted by: CompuNurd on 2015-09-09 22:13:28 All the rage but not so anymore? Seems like several people still light up and trick out their builds. Unless you mean it isn't as big a deal as it once was, then I agree as almost every custom build has a plexi window on the side.

|
Posted by: CC_333 on 2015-09-10 07:05:36 I don't really understand people's need to do this. I never have.
If I want to see a computer's innards, I'll take the cover off. But most of the time, I prefer to keep it sealed up and hidden with solid/non-transparent side panels. I think it looks cleaner and more professional that way.

Posted by: MJ313 on 2015-09-10 08:28:57 I had a 74GB velociraptor in a G5 many moons ago. It was fast as hell. Loud as hell too!
