What's even more amazing is that NeXT basically had the functional equivalent of OS X running on 030/040 hardware.

BeOS blew even NeXT away. 😀 I'm not sure I'd agree. BeOS was often said to be the spiritual successor to AmigaDOS, but they left out at least one important thing that a modern OS needs which is multiuser support (which is more about a security / permission model than about running multiple users simultaneously).
It's a good OS, mind you, just as AmigaDOS is also a good OS, but as Henry Spencer says, "those who do not understand Unix are condemned to reinvent it, poorly."
