abandonware, it should be perfectly legal for you all to snag copies. Yyyyyeah... that's not exactly true, but who cares. Image away.

Posted by: olePigeon on 2009-12-01 13:57:36 On November 27, 2006, the Librarian of Congress, on the recommendation of the Register of Copyrights, announced six classes of works which will not be subject to the prohibition against circumventing access controls (the DMCA) through October 27, 2009. One of these six classes includes:
βcomputer programs and video games distributed in formats that have become obsolete and that require the original media or hardware as a condition of access, when circumvention is accomplished for the purpose of preservation or archival reproduction of published digital works by a library or archive. A format shall be considered obsolete if the machine or system necessary to render perceptible a work stored in that format is no longer manufactured or is no longer reasonably available in the commercial marketplace.β
Edit: I just realized it says through October 27, 2009. I hope it's been extended. I just don't know.

But those Apple disks aren't copy-protected, so what you quoted doesn't apply, IIUC. They weren't copy-protected so people could make legal backup copies.
|
Posted by: olePigeon on 2009-12-02 10:13:40 They're "copy protected" in the sense that you can't make additional copies outside of a personal backup. Since the software isn't sold anymore, it's perfectly legal to extend copies in addition to any personal backup, which would normally violate copyright.

Here're the images. I didn't upload the System software because it's already available for free from Apple's website. I also didn't upload Eric's Ultimate Solitaire because Delta Tao still sells it on their website.

Here're the images. It would have been nice if you'd taken the little TM and R marks out of the file and folder names.

Posted by: Christopher on 2009-12-11 13:55:35 So Leik can these work in PPC as well?
|
Posted by: olePigeon on 2009-12-12 09:37:17
So Leik can these work in PPC as well? Most of the time they will, but not always. Some programs are written specifically in mind for that particular era of Macintosh, and the program may call on apart of the OS and/or microprocessor that isn't present in a PPC machine running a newer OS. AfterDark 2.0, for example, won't run on anything except System 6 or older.
Also, some games are written to go as fast as the computer can push it. Pirates! Gold is not playable on any PowerPC machine except maybe the 601 simply because it's too fast. The game really was designed for 040 speed machines or slower.
All I can suggest is to give it a try. π
In other news, I guess the CRT was just too old. It stopped working, but not before the picture went wonky. Shaking the display would make it work again, so that leads me to believe it's a bad solder connection. My problem is that I don't have a clue where to start looking in order to fix it. I think it got damaged in transit. π
Oh well. At least I have the boxes and accelerator cards. I'm gonna keep my eye out for another monitor and an LC motherboard. I really wanna get these working.

Posted by: JRL on 2009-12-12 20:54:23 It's a good idea to check the caps first and see if the motherboard's repairable in it's current state.
