SCORE!!! Curb: PM G3 B&W!!!
Posted by: Mars478 on 2009-11-20 04:52:20
Nice find! I have 2 B&Ws but only one is in working order (I stripped the other one for the most part). They really are great computers, especially for free, I got mine at the local college, curb scores are non-existent here AFAIK.
Out in New Jersey, Princeton area to be exact, you can find some stuff on the curb such as CRT TVs and CRT Monitors, and other bits. But the yard sales... They are a whole other thing, the yard sales are amazing! Since the people in that area are like high-to middle class they have all kinds of computers at rock bottom prices. I got my pristine Apple][e for 40$.

The next day that same guy was selling an LC3 kit, but my dad did not let me buy it 🙁

Can't say I ever seen a complete computer out on trash day / but they do tend to end up on freecycle.
I've never seen a computer on the curb here either (Springfield OH). Where do you search on Freecycle (what area)?

Hmm, I tested it with some RAM and it did the same. No display. Just powers up HDs and Drives.

There are many lights on the Mobo.

Youngstown Freecycle is where I look, havn't been lucky there in a while nor have I posted in a while looking. Too much stuff coming in from the recycler to bother.

Are the motherboard lights green (meaning ok)? Try hitting the reset on the motherboard.

Yes but the one near the processor Lights up and then turns off. This makes me think its the processor. Well whatever if it is. At the lab we have a few 350MHZ ZIFs

How do you reset the MoBo?

How do you reset the MoBo?
If memory serves me right, there is a red button that is labeled "PRAM RESET" on the motherboard. While the G3 is unplugged, hold it for five seconds or so.

Nope. No red button. Only two buttons near the PRAM battery.

Well gots me the 350MHZ Zif and will see if it works. I'll call it turkey if it works. Because I worked fixed it around Thanksgiving. I gotta start naming my machines.

Just a little tidbit I thought I'd add; be careful naming your machines. Its kind of like naming a pet, in that once you name it you love the thing to pieces and its much harder to get rid of.

They're hard to get rid of anyways.... I've never named any of my computers and I've still got 26 of them laying around here.

Posted by: Mars478 on 2009-11-24 08:43:08
I don't plan to get rid of it anytime soon 🙂

My sawtooth is still kicking and my B&W is still around.

I prefer the sawtooth for it's speed and the B&W because I love the color of the case.

That being said I have named neither of them and I have also never found a curb computer although I have set a few on the curb.

I still have my b&w g3 I am not 100% what I am going to do with it. I am leaning towards parting it out in the future and fitting pc guts to turn it into a hackintosh/media server although my problem with turning it into a media server is that for just serving media that'd be an awfully big power sucker.

Just use the 100$ atom kit from tigerdirect.com

Posted by: zerotypeq on 2009-11-27 05:50:19
I won't buy from tiger direct due to the web loyalty scam they were a part of, but i already have an atom mobo in mind that has 2 pci slots and 2xpci cards with 4 sata ports each. I am still up in the air with that and it probally won't be for a while, but I have also lookd into one of those plug computers although the usb bandwidth for hooking up hdds seems like it might be a bottle neck :/ .

edit: http://consumerist.com/2009/11/88-big-sites-earning-millions-from-webloyalty-scam.html sites I will never buy from.

Posted by: Mars478 on 2009-11-27 06:24:47
Wow... that sucks.

I am going to buy myself a nice C2D kit in the near future and was looking there. Is that still going on?

Posted by: zerotypeq on 2009-11-27 07:08:48
From my understanding most if not all sites have stopped it due to the negative attention, but I still just have a problem giving my money to a company that scammed its customers (esp when there are good alternatives that are close if not beat them in price).

curb scores are non-existent here AFAIK.
Most times of the year it would be bad to put things out on the curb, they get rained on. ;D
